Sub $500 Digital Camera Recommendations?

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera. I'm trying to budget myself at less than $500. I'm not a camera genius so a short learning curve would be nice. However, I would like to be able to learn with the camera. I want to eventually be able to take much nicer photos.

Would anybody care to share some recommendations with me?

Knowing a little about what kinds of photography you'd like to do, and how deeply you'd like to get into photography as a hobby would be helpful.

Well, primarily it will be for family vacation photos, new baby photos, etc I would surmise. However, I would like to to learn how to take nicer photos. If I had to guess, nature photos would be a focus. Thanks.

You might consider a "superzoom", which is a digital point and shoot with an extended zoom range - typically around 10X or 12X. Canon's S5 and Sony's DSC-H7 are examples of cameras in that category, although there are many others as well. This page might give you a start on your research.
