Stys in the eye?

Does anyone have experience with stys?

My youngest has one bad under her left eye for almost a month now. After 8 days on 2 differnet antiboditic (Ped didn't give anything and didn't get into a specialist for another week) she now has 2 more starting. Specialist has given us a 3rd medicine to use with the others. She goes back in a month (after our trip) and if not better she mentioned surgery.

Is this common? Anyhelpful hints I should do. Ash won't let me do the compress at all anymore and is giving me a lot of trouble with the creme the last few days (she is 2 1/2). (The specialist said today about doing the creme and the drops while she is sleeping, OM it was So-much easier tonight) TIA!

The thing still didn't pop yet, I am sure it will just in time for holiday pictures. Like it is not bad enough taking her out and everyone looking at her with a huge red area, now there will be pictures galore. Oh well it could be worse, this is just a bump hopefully.

BTW, did anyone have surgery for a sty and what kind of scars do you have? I am hoping none. For Ash the area is swelled the whole way down to the cheek bone.

BF had a sty for so long- over a year- and he had to have it surgically removed. There is no scar as far as I can see. I have to admit he said the surgery itself was a bit unpleasant, but it was actually painless..

I had a sty removed several years ago, actually had to have two treatments to remove it. The surgery was uncomfortable for me--I didn;t like getting the shots to numb the area. I have no scar-the doctor went into my lower lid from the inside, so if you look at the inner lining of my eye, then you can see a whter area where the small incision was made.

old roommate of mine had to have one removed...it was on her upper eyelid...
I had to hold her down to put the cream in for her (like that episode of Friends...heheh)

I've never had a stye last longer then a week...and they've never "popped"...but just "went away" over time.

had a neighbor whose little one got these repeatedly due to a blocked tear duckt. they did a surgical procedure (no visable scar) and the difference was like night and day. no more stys, no more "goopy" eyes.

hope your little one feels better quick.

Ugg, it keeps getting reder and ulgier. I just hate that it is hurting her.

Red and uglier is actually a good thing. They have to get to this point, before they drain and go away. Believe me, I'm the queen of stys!! Moist heat is the best way to go.. anytime I've used antibiotic drops it just made them last longer. The only time I had one surgically removed was when I used the drops. It ended up being a chalazion, which is a residual "bump", no infection. Make one of those washcloth bunnies and keep running it under warm water... she might cooperate a bit more.

just a little update....still there, all 3 of them. At least the 2 new ones are not getting bigger or more red. The big one still didn't pop. It was scabby a few days ago but just blistery (still very swollen) now.

She won't even let me sneak the medicine in while she is sleeping. It must really hurt because anytime I touch it she jolts very bad. At least I can still get the 3 medicines in. No luck on the washclothes though.

Newest update....she has 4 of them and another one on the bottom popped and bled a few days ago. This week sticky oozy stuff started coming out so she is back on antibodic drops and still on sched. for surgery on the 21st.

Poor baby! I have never heard of stys so bad. Hope it all goes well.

Newest update....she has 4 of them and another one on the bottom popped and bled a few days ago. This week sticky oozy stuff started coming out so she is back on antibodic drops and still on sched. for surgery on the 21st.

These sound like what dd has had, chalazions. She had to have 2 surgically removed. One we were able to get to go away. She currently has one, but it has gotten smaller in size. The sticky oozy stuff is actually it draining which is a good thing. Can you try to push the drainage out? Hot compresses will help it to drain. We also used an antibiotic cream called Tobradex. As far as the surgery goes, they will give her valium to drink to make her relax and then they will give her anesthesia to knock her out. The procedure only last a couple of mins. The anesthesia is very light, so she won't be out long. She will need to rest that day and continue with antibotic ointment. At least this was how dd's 2 surgeries went. Thoughts our with you and dd. Even though it is a minor procedure, it is very difficult to see a little one go through this. If I can answer any other questions, please ask. Keep us updated.

She said it sounded like an eye infection and gave Ashley different eye drops saying it was an eye infection, (now I am starting to wonder if you are right.) With just one day they are getting better, still goopy but not so much and more dried out looking.

Ashlyn's were not as big as what you described Ashley's. I would say once we were able to get it to start drain, I would say just a couple of days to get it out. We always used baby soap and a cute tip to clean her eye lids where the ducts and pores are. Can you see the drain plug? We could see Ashlyn's and knew that was where it was draining. We would put some hot rags on her eye and then gently push the bump towards the drain plug and we finally got it all to come out. DD wasn't happy with it, but she also did not want to have another surgery. She was 2 1/2 with her 1st, and is now 5 1/2. Hopefully you can get it all to drain. I would suggest trying to do this several times a day.
