We have never bought patio furniture before but since my husband got a substancial bonus we have decided to try and make our backyard attractive. We are looking at a patio set and also the large patio canopy like this,

My question, what about storms? What do you do with them? Or how do you anchor them well enough so that they don't blow away during storms? We don't have a patio to set it on and are planning to build a stone walkway from our backdoor and grill to the furniture and canopy.

I know its probably a stupid question but would love advice about storms and high wind etc.

It depends on how much it weighs. The canopy looks as though you could easily take it down if a storm was coming in. For hurricanes we put the furiture in the garage or even the house if we have to. We don't have a canopy but we do have umbrellas. We put them down and put them in the garage.

If you just need to protect the cushions from rain you can get attractive cushion boxes that double as benches.

We lost 2 glass tables in 3 years and a gazebo similar to the one you posted last year due to storms. Other than taking things down-the only other answer is to pray real hard I guess. We bought an awning for the back of our home instead.

we bought one at walmart, but instead of wood it is metal. The corners are also metal and the bottom has screw holes so that you can screw it down... We screw it into our deck, but you can also screw it into patio blocks....

We have something that looks like this http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4200661 . Twice the wind has had it's way. One time bending the frame. DH even anchored it in the ground with 12 inch spikes, still didn't stay upright!!!! Pulled the suckers right out of the ground! The canopy acts like a sail when a good wind picks up. We love our swing and wouldn't be without one, but if a storm is coming, we take the canopy off.

Wind will ruin these things in a flash (and just regular 20 mph winds - not just hurricane force winds).

Just FYI, my parents lost two awnings from the back of their house due to winds. They lived in Frederick, MD - hardly known for tornados or hurricanes. I'm not certain anything is safe where mother nature is concerned, lol.
