"Stupid Machine!".... No, stupid YOU.

I was at the bank yesterday and a woman came in. I knew that she was in the car lane for the ATM, as the bank has a window. I'm at the counter being waited on when she says " I put my money in the wrong slot, and now it won't give me my money back. Stupid machine!"

I looked at her and said, "Excuse me, but I am in the middle of a transaction, and you screwed up the machine; the machine did not screw you up."

The bank manager came out and was trying to handle the problem, and she wasn't letting him get a word in. All I know is that, according to her, she tried to put $46 in the ATM, and she put it in "the wrong place", and she was really angry - probably more at herself, but her vitriol was being aimed at everybody else.

Anyway, I left, and I guess with all the commotion, I left my ATM card at the bank. They called me to come and get it. I went back 20 minutes later and the woman was still in the bank, but on her phone.... and as I passed her on the way in, the only words I heard her say was "Stupid machine!". :rotfl:

I can sympathize with the mistake. We all make mistakes. But I can't believe she was still blaming the machine.... and, BTW, she REALLY broke it. My wife was at the ATM later in the day and it was out of service, still, about 3 hours later.

Stupid machine. ;)

How do you put the money in the wrong spot on an ATM machine-the ones around here only have one spot to put the money--unless she forced it in where the card goes :confused3

I call that an End User Issue.

People think I'm a cool techie type. I'm actually making fun of them.

could also say it's an "ID.10.7 or ID.10.T" error. (I've seen it both ways.)

The ATMs at BofA have two deposit slots. One is for bills, the other is for checks. I always double check before I put anything into the machine. I'm afraid I'll break the "stupid machine". :goodvibes

THIS.

I always use the ATM for my banking to get cash as well as make deposits. I will tell you at BOA that slot for check deposits, holy cow, as you put your check just so slowly into the slot it pulls it into the machine with amazing force. So you better know what you are doing!!!!!

I bet that is what the lady did but why is it taking the bank so long to straighten out the situation? :headache:

I have HSBC and our ATMs are the same way, I always triple check to make sure that I am putting things in the right spot. Also with our ATMs the actual bank employees do not have access to the ATM but rather a seperate entity comes in each night to empty it out, so if this is what she did it could be a pretty big headache. Still her fault though.

I was a drive thru teller at a bank and college and you would be amazed at the stupid things people do.

  • Send in the empty tube and then press the speaker button and request $XX dollars. Umm, who are you? Where is your check? Do you have an account here? What is your account number? Do you have an ID?
  • Would load up the pneumatic tube FULL of coins and then would be shocked when it got stuck. Sometimes we could unlodge it with another tube, but all too many times we had to call Diebold to come pull it out.
  • A lane would be broken (see above) so we would turn the red light on over the lane AND place a cone in the lane but yet every now in then someone would mow down the cone with their car then have the nerve to press the speaker button stating there was no tube in the box.
  • Sometimes people would pull away from the box and realize they still had the tube so they would just chuck it out the window in the grass outside the bank.:confused3

"You can't fix stupid!"

I work for a company who deals with gas stations, and too often I've heard of stories where the block off the gas pumps for being broken, they'll put out cones, caution tape and out of order signs and STILL people will drive through that and try to use the pumps

Okay, the last one actually made me laugh out loud. I can just picture it in my mind. :rotfl2:

When I was a teenager, my mom and I did this...loaded the tube with coins. We were both so embarassed. There was a sign on the machine "No Bulk Change", but neither one of us read it until it was too late. We both felt stupid.

A couple of years later, I became a bank teller while in college too. I saw many "stupid" things, but after the incident with my mom, I could laugh with most people. It is kind of funny sometimes.

I think many people are surprised to realize that bank tellers often receive a hint of the perfumes or odors that are in customers' cars. I remember opening the tube and smelling smoke, strong perfumes, food, or whatever was in the car. It wasn't always pleasant.

I too worked as a teller in the drive thru and yeah we saw all kinds of stuff like you posted above. I also had a women put her ID on top of the tube and send it in. The tube and her ID never made it but got stuck in there. I mean who thinks its OK to put it on top of the tube and not inside? :confused3

wait a sec... i use boa. i just made a deposit today actually. yes there are two slots. one for checks and one for cash, but you have to select which type of deposit you're doing and then they "open" the slot. it's closed until you select cash or check deposit. and it only opens the one you need! maybe the machine is different or older, but you can't put cash into the wrong slot unless you selected the wrong type of deposit!

  • I'm afraid that this is standard procedure for some places. My bank doesn't require withdrawal forms. All I have to do is pull up to the drive thru, send the empty tube and tell them how much I want, out of what account and what my account number is. If they don't know me, they ask a few related questions or need an ID. That hardly ever happens though.

Well maybe at some maw and paw kettle local bank this may be true, but at any large bank (Wells Fargo, Chase, BOA) there are security measures in place and you will need to either enter a PIN or sign a withdrawal or counter check in order to withdraw. I can't imagine even a local bank wouldn't require at least a signature. What is to stop you then from coming in the following week and saying "I didn't withdraw $200 last week"
