My son want an Itouch for Christmas and I am a complete technological idiot who doesn't even own an ipod. So....

Does an itouch come with any music or games on it or do you have to buy everything additional to the basic price?

How do you get stuff on it? Do you connect it the internet or does it go through your computer?

Who do you buy stuff from? Does it all have to be from Apple or are there other places too? I've heard music is $1/song, how much are games?

If you own a CD, is there a way to get songs from that onto the itouch?

Is there a monthly fee?

One person told me you can text with it? Is this true?

Thanks for any help you can give.:)

I can answer a few of them-for the most part you need to download apps/games, but there are thousands out there that are free. Yes, you can text with it, and access the internet. I don't THINK there is a monthly fee.

DS18 wanted an Itouch last year, but he never listens to music. He needed a new cell phone so we got him a Droid. That way he only had one thing to carry around and he really just wanted the Itouch for the games.

An iTouch does not come with any music or games. You have to buy everything additional to the basic price.

"Connect it to the internet" and "go through your computer" are confusing phrases. You connect the iTouch itself to your computer using a cable that comes in the package with the iTouch. Then you connect to the internet using your computer and go to the iTunes store. Then you can select, purchase and download whatever music or game you want and the content will be downloaded onto your iTouch while it is connected to your computer.

I've never bought anything for my Apple products from anyplace other than the Apple store. If you search the iTunes store you will see the variety of games and their prices.

You can load all of your personal CDs onto your iTouch at no cost.

There is no monthly fee. The iTouch is a wifi only product, so if you are in range of a free wifi network or you can connect to one (if you have wireless service at your house already, for example) you can get on the internet. If you are out of range of a wireless network you cannot get on the internet.

There are a couple accessories you might want to invest in for the Touch. I would strongly recommend buying a screen protector for it - it's simply a clear plastic cover that protects against major scratches. Not expensive and so worth it. Also consider a case of some kind for protection and make it easier to hold on to. The Touch should come with a set of earbuds and most kids seem to be fine with those.

I've had an iTouch now for a few years. I love it. (Second Gen.)

The first thing you should do is download iTunes from Apple, this is free. (Note: you do NOT need a Mac for this software.) Think of it as a music organizer. From there, you can insert CDs and iTunes will copy the music to your computer and organize it in iTunes. You can also buy albums through the iTunes store (I stopped buying CDs as I find this really simple to do and it cuts down on clutter!) Your iTouch will come with a cable that connects it to your computer. After you connect, you'll be able to "sync" your iTouch with iTunes, this will transfer the music already organized in iTunes over to your iTouch.

The iTouch can connect to the internet (I didn't know you could send texts, if you can, you need a wifi connection.) If you're concerned about your son going wild buying music & apps, I suggest you set up the iTunes Store account with your information and your password, have him ask you to enter your password any time he'd like to purchase something.

I'd suggest going in to an Apple Store and talking with the people working there. They were wonderful with me when I bought my iTouch. Prior to my iTouch, I had an iPod Shuffle, which is the most basic iPod you can get. So they really needed to educate me on what I was buying.

If you have wifi in your house, you won't ever need to plug the iTouch into the computer for downloading. It does all that (iTunes, apps, etc) through wifi.

I have the 1st generation iTouch meaning the very first model that came out 3 years ago. It didn't come with loaded games or music, you have to purchase them at the iTunes store directly on the device. That's simple to do, all you have to do is have a wifi connection or wireless internet. You can download games, music, tv shows, movies etc. Games start at $.99 they go up depending on what it is. The most I've payed for a game is $4.99. The makers of the games are always updating games for free, so that's a big help. A song starts at $.99 most of them are $1.29 a song. You can buy full albums starting at $5.99 and up. TV Shows are $1.99, $2.99 for HD. Movies start at $9.99-$14.99. You can also rent TV shows & movies for $3.99. Don't forget, you can always buy iTunes gift cards too.

if you own a CD its easy to load them to the iPod/iTouch. I have both and its simple, first you have to download iTunes to your computer, upload the cd to your computer, then connect the device to your computer and follow a few prompts, it can be done in a matter of minutes.

There is no monthly fee, you buy what ever you want whenever you want. I've been using iTunes for about 5 years now, its all I use.

The only accessories that come with the device are the standard apple earbuds, USB cable and a dock for charging.

Again, I have the 1st generation iTouch, I can't text with it, (I don't think) but I do have an iPad, I'm able to text on if I want to, so something tells me that the newer generations of iTouch probably does allow texting.

I hope this helps! I love my iTouch, especially for web browsing and apps (games)!

It would be helpful if you could get yourself an itunes for dummies type of book. I have to say I really hate itunes. It's not the most user friendly thing for PC users.

I'm not computer savvy at all. But to me, iTunes was very easy to use.

The kids in the family all have itouches and love them. Two things for parents to think about

- If you have wireless in your home, the itouch gives you full acces to the internet.
- Once you set up an account with apple to buy stuff, it's incredibly easy to buy more stuff

These things are some of the best features of an itouch. But the do require some serious converations with the kid first.

Forgot to add..

The itouch cannot send text messages by itself. But can do things that are almost as good (Or bad, depending upon how you feel about texting.)

You can download programs that mimic texting. You need wireless access to the internet to send text messages and usually an email account to receive texts.
