I just swtiched cell phone companies to save a little money (from Verizon to Virgin). I took my old number to Virgin and they've activated me, so I'm all set with that. What do I do about Verizon? Since Virgin carried my number over, is my old Verizon account automatically closed or do I need to contact them separately?

My old phone still says Verizon on the screen but when DH tried to use it, it started dialing an operator... and my online account says Verizon cannot display my balance information at this time. So this makes me think my account is already closed. Can anyone who did this before enlighten me?

:confused3

Sounds like you got a new phone with your Virgin service?

Your old phone could say Verizon because it is still programmed that way, but to be safe, you should contact Verizon yourself and make sure your account is closed.

You should still be able to dial 611 on your old phone and they will be able to verify that it was cancelled

You definitely should contact your old provider, or you could be billed by two companies. This happened to me when switching from Cingular to T-Moble. But, not because they were not notified, but because they said that I had to give them a 30 day notice.

If you port your number before your contract is up, you still pay the $300 or so cancellation fee right?

I think so, but luckily my contract was long over.

Thanks for the info everyone. I called 611 and talked to an operator - looks like they're just going to send me the partial bill for the last couple of weeks of service but basically the account is closed otherwise.

This exact thing happened to me!

OP, definitely call original co. and ensure it was cancelled. You mat still have a month to pay for though as I did.
