Stupid Baking Question

I am no cook or baker, so I have a bit of a dumb question. I am making sugar cookies for a baby shower this weekend, and want to add M&Ms on top. If I put them in before I bake, will they melt/color run? I'm afraid that if I wait and put them in after (even when still warm), the M&Ms will fall out. What do all you bakers do? Thanks!

I would put them on before baking. The color may run slightly staining the cookie immediately around the m&m, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm not sure what type of cookie you are making, what the M&M's will be a decoration for, but what I would do is use some frosting in a piping bag and use is at "glue" to stick the M&M's on the cookies once they are cooled.

Even if you cook the M&M's on top of the cookies the could still fall off after they cool, so I think this might be a better solution. Plus sometimes when you bake them the candy shell can crack (think of the Keebler cookies with M&M's in them).

I agree with this. If you want the m&m's to look pretty on the tops of the cookies, just add them after the cookies cool, sticking them on with frosting. If you bake them in, they will taste good, but not look pretty and perfect. The candy shell will be crackled, and might stain the dough a little bit.

You can bake them they won't melt or run. They even make m&m baking chips if you prefer. I love to make m&m cookies yummy but they taste even better if you use a chocolate chip recipe and substitute the m&m's for choco chips.
