Ok dis peeps...a few years ago my daughter ((7 at the time) found a bit of conveyor belt in her cheetos bag. Frito lay confirmed it and sent us $50 plus box of snacks. Fast forward, and we just found plastic in our Tombstone pepperoni pizza. They sent us $20 and asked for plastic back. I know stuff happens, but really??

I found a piece of metal in dry dog food once, and the company did ask if I would send it back. They didn't demand it, but they said it would be helpful in their investigation if I could send it to them. (Along with the code from the dog food bag so they'd know when/where it was made). I sent it to them and had visions of some dude in whatever plant it was going around from machinery to machinery trying to match up the metal to something broken.

Stuff happens despite even the strictest controls.
If someone chews or swallows one of those pieces (or other adulterants, like germs) it can cause all kinds of problems. Stuff may happen, but they need to figure out why, and prevent it from happening again. As consumers we have a right to have our food free of adulterants. And if it’s not, manufacturers are breaking the law. Not a big deal till something happens to (general) you.

No laws broken. Like I said, stuff just happens. Lord, look at all the recall issues with fresh produce. E Coli in it. Dirt. Worms.

Agree, stuff happens and no harm came from either issue. I am lazy and don't use coupons so honestly, the freebies never get redeemed. It is just funny to me I guess.

Exactly. If someone gets sick, companies are liable. Food services are inspected and held to standards.

Just spoke with DH, who works in food manufacturing. He said if a piece of plastic or metal was found in his food, there would be a recall, and the FDA and OSHA would get involved. There would also be a recall if something was mislabeled.

Well, just checks some of the packaging of some of the products on my shelf. Shelled Walnuts. "May contain shell fragments". Pitted olives. "May contain pits".
If your husband works in food services he knows there are laws listing home many inspect parts are legal in processed food. How many foreign objects are allowed before a recall is triggered. My dad worked in a cannery, so I have a little knowledge too.

Parts of naturally occurring things like shells are different than plastic, metal, or bacteria.

DH is responsible for all things like quality and inspections. The buck stops with him.

The FDA drops in unannounced. They just underwent a four day FDA inspection and everything had to be pristine or they could shut them down. Selling to the European market triggers even more stringent guidelines.

We have also been on the receiving end of adulterants in food involving four hospitalizations.

I was at a seafood restaurant years ago and ordered a dish containing mussels. I took a bite and found there was a bit of metal that had broken off or the tool used to open them. I told the server. I wasn't mad, but thought the chef should know about it. They comped my meal and that was the end of it.

Wow. The cannery my dad worked at had a USDA Inspector permanently assigned to their facility.

Aren’t there even acceptable levels of animal/bug poop in food?

As for OP, I remember finding a piece of metal in a bag of chips I was eating. I contacted them and they asked for the metal piece back, along with the bag I had been eating from. I seem to recall I got some vouchers in return.

That doesn’t mean much. Our illnesses and hospitalizations occurred from a product that had USDA onsite.

I agree with others that it is probably to determine what happened. But I wonder if it could also be a way of verifying your claim. Sad as it is, there seems to be an uptick in customers complaining in hopes of getting free stuff-even if the complaint is made up. (I am NOT saying you are doing this. Just societial manners seems to be lacking of late and I think companies are tired of being taken advantage of by the saying "The customer is always right.") By asking you for the plastic, it verifies and helps them to try and figure out where it came from and where there is a problem.
