Students told no tote bags

I agree. I will be 30 this year and it seems like the schools have completely changed. Glad I am not in school today. School was hard enough back than so I can only imagine what it is like for kids today. I was a senior in high school during Columbine and that was a scary enough time. While I agree some changes had to happen with security after that I think some schools have taken it overboard. If backpacks really pose such a security threat that they have to be kept in lockers at all times during the school day than why do they allow them into the school at all?

This country is good about saying that we are not going to let terriorist change our lifestyle and to stop us from living our lives the way we want to but haven't we done just that? Ultimately they got exactly what they wanted from us. A country that is so scared they will do anything to make themselves feel better even if it does not really make any sense nor make us any safer.

Terrorists didn't cause Columbine, students did. :confused3 I guess you could call them american terrorists, but I don't think its the same.

When I was in elementary school (this was in the 90s---so fairly recent), we had two large coat closets in each classroom and the coats were hung on the hooks and the backpacks were put on the floor of those closets. No backpacks allowed at desks. Everything had to be in our desk, on top of our desk or in the closet. BUT, we were not allowed to go to the closet to get stuff out of our backpacks unless we asked teh teacher.

In middle school, no backpacks were allowed to be carreid around. They had to be put in your locker before your first class and could not be taken out until after 8th period. you could go to your locker in between every class but considering we only had 3 minutes in between each class, most kids carried the books for morning classes and stopped at their locker between lunch and activity period and than carried teh books for the rest of their classes.

In high school, we had lockers. The only people who used them were freshman and some sophmores. We were allowed to carry backpacks to classes (it was easier for most people, we had about 10 minutes in between classes and we had an overcrowded school). But....the teachers would have loved it if there was a no back pack rule. People were constantly leaving their backpacks in the aisles, in front of their desks, etc and it was a tripping hazard especially during the winter when we all had our coats as well. It was terrible.

You can not protect your kids from every little thing.

But wouldn't you want me, as your child's math teacher, to take whatever simple measures I could, to TRY to ensure their safety?? Again, I'm not talking so much about them tripping over backpack under normal circumstances, but about the ability to quickly and safely exit the buiding when that fire alarm goes off.

WOW............."Your DD can show off her status symbol elsewhere." ??????

What is that about? DD loves the patterns. She saved her money for what she wanted. She does not want things bases on "status symbols". She is happy with her VB tote bag, loves her Payless "Airwalk" faux Uggs (recommends them to others for comfort), plays with American Girl dolls, and loves to color. She likes certain things and certainly is not playing "keeping up with the Jones". That is not her.

I love how judgemental people can be!

Thanks to others for their ideas and concerns. So far she is using the big metal boxes in the hallway. She'll continue to use her tote because she just cannot carry the backpack. Her books weigh almost as much as she does.

My DD's middle school allows sling bags, but no back packs or large purses. I'm sure it is about space constraints.
