I was just wondering, I booked a week at SSR for Aug and I know that you can REQUEST a non smoking room, how often does that request not get fulfilled? Has this happened to anyone? Does it happen often? Any info would be great!

On our very first trip with DVC (in '01) we booked BWV 2 months out and ended up with a smoking room. I thought it smelled pretty bad, but the kids didn't. Since it was our first trip, we were too excited to care about it anyway. It never happened again.

The number of smoking rooms is so small compared to the number of non-smoking rooms, that the chances of getting a smoking room when you've requested otherwise are small. (In fact, DVC has recently reduced the number of smoking rooms available). We've never received a smoking room - we joined DVC in 1999.

The reason you read about it happening "so often" on these boards is that there are several posters here who hold very firm anti-smoking views. (Don't mean to suggest that is wrong. I personally share them). Just about every thread on smoking/non-smoking ends up to be more than 2 pages. It leads us to erroneously believe that it is common to get assigned to a smoking room when we have requested non-smoking. That's just not true.

Do I believe that some have received smoking rooms when they have specifically requested non-smoking? Yes. Is it a frequent occurence? NO.

If you have medical reasons for needing non-smoking accomodations, make sure MS notes it on your reservation. Those requests are filled ahead of others.

Best wishes -

The entire resort should be made non-smoking with a $500 fine for violators.

In 9 DVC trips, I've never received a smoking room.

From posts on this board, a bigger problem seems to be with smokers who smoke in a non-smoking room, leaving it stinky for the next occupant. I know when we were at BWV in Dec, a family was checking in across the hall and they were complaining to the bellman that someone had smoked in their non-smoking room. Not sure what they did (if they were able to move).

In 8 DVC stays, we've been given a smoking room once, at HHI during spring break. It didn't smell of smoke at all (and since we're both former smokers, we're pretty sensitive to the smell now). The only way I knew it was smoking optional was that before I went, I'd read that that building was a smoking optional building.

Thanks! That will ease my wife's feeling. Her allergies would make that kind of stay hard.

That could have been us as we went in dec the Monday before xmas to the BWV when we got to the room it had a horrible smell of smoke (we put it down to the cold snap that they had and the people who stayed in the room before us could not sand out on the balcony and smoke as it would have been cold for them) you could taste in your mouth we sent bell by back down with luggage and we went to lobby and requested a new room but as it xmas all the rooms where full as we had booked 11 months out requested non smoking and had a child with chest problems it was unacceptable so after a bit of toeing and frowning by the manager where offered 11nights at OKW but as we wanted to use BWV as a base so we could walk to epcot and walk round the different hotels there at night we turned this down>Then we were told we could stay in the Inn side staying in concierge at the boardwalk and the dvc would pick up the tab so whe took that offer. When we aske the manager do they inform prior guests about the inconvinance they cause while smoking in the room he said it was disny policy never to rebuke a customer so someone smoking in a non smoking room cot the dvc a few thousand $$

requested a smoking room when we book - and we have never received one. We were always told to go ahead and smoke in the rooms. I never have though - but I have smoked on the balcony's.

It happened to us 2 weeks ago at BWV.

We had non-smoking for medical reasons. We were told since we were the last to check in that day with the request, the only room available was a smoking optional room. I said this was not acceptable.

The manager came along and said another manager was on her way to the room to verify the condition -- they did not think the room was smoked in for a while. Came back and said the room seemed fine. So, we accepted it, based on the condition that if it did in fact smell and/or we had any problems, they would have to do something else (I'm not sure what else, although they did tell us we would be able to move the next day -- not something we wanted to do. The manager said they would have figured something else out.).

As it turned out, the room had absolutely no traces of smoke.

I always try to remember that what you read about on the message board is NOT the norm.

For example, people over on the resort board post when they get upgraded rooms. New posters often see this and assume LOTS of people get upgraded. No, those of us who got what we paid for did not post LOL. Same thing with DVC rooms. I have never posted on my room, but I have always been satisified.

Our problem was we got a NS room that someone had smoked in. Since we requested a NS room and got one, they were not willing to move us even though it reeked of smoke from the previous guest.

I just returned from Hawaii, and two of the hotels I stayed at had this policy:

All rooms were non-smoking.

Please feel free to smoke outside on your balcony and/or patio.

Since most of DVC buildings have balconies or patios, why couldn't they do this?

Just a thought.

I also want to point out that in Disney's defense I almost ALWAYS get what I request (of course non smoking is my ONLY request) I have accepted a smoking room if it was ready early. (I can live with it! My mom smokes)

I have stayed at LOTS of other hotels where as far as I can tell NO attempt was made to look and see what I requested (and these are NICE hotels!)

We got one once at VWL, or at least someone had previously smoked in the room. It did stink but the room was stuffy when we opened the door anyways. We turned on the fan, air, blower, and opened the door for a while. We were only there one night before a cruise so we didn't complain and actually once we aired it out it was much better.

CarnotaurDad-

At the BCV annual meeting in December, we were informed that the patios and balconies are considered to be a part of the room. Therefore, smoking is not allowed on patios or balconies of non-smoking rooms. We were also told that this is a Florida State law, not a Disney policy.

I'm sure the smoking policy you found in Hawaii would be a better alternative than this current law. Perhaps, it would eliminate smoking in non-smoking rooms.

If I am misinformed, or I misunderstood, would someone please correct my understanding?

Thanks...

If this is the case, why is Disney telling people that are put in a NS room that wanted a Smoking room to just go ahead and smoke in the room or on the balcony/patio.

I believe you were misinformed OR the CM's are breaking the law and the rules.

We have been members since 1997, have always requested a non-smoking room, and have always gotten a non-smoking room. I don't think it's a huge issue.

This past Dec. checked in on Dec 27th to OKW GV and was told that my requests had been met except for non-smoking (my first priority with near a pool the only other one) but that the unit had been "Desmoked". It was ready at 8 AM so I didn't object and due to the lovely warm weather was able to leave doors, windows open and with the fans going it was okay. There was still a slight odor but fortunately not enough to cause my daughter's asthma to kick in. That was the only time in 12 different units that it has happened so won't complain even though I had made the reservation day by day at the 11 month window.
