Strollers and Rascals

Is it me, or are the stroller and rascal nazis getting worse? We just came back last Friday from a ten day vacation. We’ve been down to WDW more than thirty times. My sense is there more and more strollers being used, and more and more people riding around in those rascals. My complaint is that most of them (the stroller pushers or rascal riders) operate in a haphazard manner, oblivious to other people and intent on jamming their way into spaces presently occupied by human appendages (i.e. my legs). Don’t get me started on ten year olds riding in a stroller, or perfectly healthy (albeit lazy) people getting out of their rascal to ride a ride. My kids and I have taken to calling these rascals “weasels.”

Sometimes people have disabilities that are not apparent to the eye. I wouldn't pass judgement on an adult riding a scooter or an older child being wheeled in a stroller. You never know what hidden afflictions they suffer.

But I agree that there seem to be more and more scooters and strollers in the parks than I ever noticed before. I attribute the bruised calfs and banged up shins to the distractions that WDW provides and perhaps a little inexperience on the part of some scooter riders. Most of the wounds I've suffered as a result of stroller/scooter mishaps were unintentional on the part of the operator. And perhaps I contributed some culpability by walking directly in front of them.

There was a very active thread on this subject a few weeks ago. A local but nationaly broadcast radio talk show had a whole morning show on this after one of the host returned from a week in WDW with his kids. He has been several times prior and even had this show broadcast from WDW on a few ocassions. The consenus it seems is that if you need them fine but there is considerable abuse of them as well. I am sure we all know this is happening and whats Disney or the rest of us to do but put up with it..smjj

Well, that depends on how you look at things sometimes... We rented a stroller every day for my 3 1/2 year old grandson and when the crowds were thin, there was no problem BUT on the day after Christmas, the crowds were unmanagable. Well, we were always courteous with our stroller and only had one accident where we were at a stand-still and someone walked into us and they had a "problem" with it saying we walked into them... On the day after Christmas, we were trying to be good about it and were at a stand-still because The people would just walk back and forth in front of the stroller and wouldn't even try to make room for me to "catch up" with my group even though I was saying "excuse me please" so I just got so frustrated, I just plowed through. If you knew me, you'd appreciate this because I'm a non-agressive/ non-assertive person most of the time. I think sometimes, people with strollers aren't very thoughtful and I would have agreed with you totally before this year when I was in that situation myself. I saw more problem with the non-stroller/non-wheelchair/scooter people. Most of them had no regard whatsoever for us!!! Too bad, it shouldn't be an "us and them" type situation... and it wouldn't be IF people had consideration for each other. Without sounding to mushy or "goodie two shoes" about it, Wouldn't WDW be a little nicer if instead of wanting the magic from the CM's for ourselves, IF we spread a little of our own to each other each day????? I know my family and I do on a daily basis whether in WDW or NOT.

What an ignorant assumption that someone who can get out of a scooter can walk the park all day. Tell that to my mom, 4 weeks post chemo. She can walk, and needs to a bit. But a day of park walking at even a slow pace would not work. Planning this trip is the light at the end of her chemo tunnel.

Gee, it seems I've seen this callous pot stirring somewhere recently. Too bad they don't ban I.P.'s all the time instead of just a name.

I agree that noone should assume that just because someone can get off of an ECV to ride something does not mean that they should be able to walk all day.My dad had an infection in his spinal chord last summer which destroyed bone.There is no way he could walk all day.

That was an unpleaseant time in the world and the Nazis stir up many different emotions. I agree that it is used somewhat out of context here. but we should never forget that a group of people who make up there own rules to get what they want (see the simmularities between 1930's germany and the stroller people pushing others aorund) someone has to stand up to them.

We had a stroller for DS4, but other 2 walked. On the second day of using it, it got a terrible squeek At first, it was very obnoxious, but we got used to it. Then, it started to work to our advantage--that night a fter fireworks, it cleared a path for us I didn't realize til we were out to the buses how we managed to get out so fast!!! I think people with strollers don't mean to be a problem for the most part. You get a bunch of people together with strollers and toes are bound to get run over. It goes with the territory of kids. In Disney World, I would think some of that is to be expected. That said, courtesy should prevail on the part of the stroller pusher

To those who may have been offended by my nazi term, I apologize. I meant to use that term in the generic sense, and that was insensitive of me. And I certainly don't mean to offend anyone with medical conditions. I was merely venting; when someone runs into you with a rascal or stroller, and they get mad at you (as has happened in the past to us) it gets particularly frustrating.

Agree d- my BIL is a partial foot amputee. He CAN walk, he just ABSOLUTELY cannot possibly walk long distances. The ONLY way he can enjoy the World with his family is if he has a scooter. On the same notw - my almost 8 yo has many health and developmental issues that are not obvious. He will be in a stroller this trip because that's what HE needs to be able to enjoy Disney.

What difference does it make to ANYBODY else if people "deserve" or don't "deserve" to be in a wheelchair, scooter or stroller? Why would people even waste time thinking or commenting about that?

I often find that the judgemental people are often the unhappiest people around. Lighten up, stop being so critical of others and spend more time looking at all the fantastic things around you. Focus on the giggling children, the parents with the exhausted bodies and huge grins. Look at the FUN, the joy, the families building great memories. There's so much to see around you and enjoy if you are a positive person.

I think what we need around here is a post that asks how many people are sick of hearing people complain about strollers and ECV's!

It doesn't matter if you're walking or pushing a stroller or riding an ECV, you will always find rude people who bump into you and walk on by without so much as a glance. It's a fact of life, but compound that issue by being in a tightly packed park with visual stimuli all around, and the chances of being bumped goes up greatly. Does that mean people should be rude and not apologize? No, but again, it doesn't matter if you're in Disney or Kmart, you're going to find rude people in this world.

And as for the ECV's, just because you can't tell that someone is handicapped doesn't mean that they aren't! It's people with your mentality (you and your family calling them "rascal weasels") that made me refuse to ride in an ECV after having major surgery for cancer. I was certain that people would think I was just riding one because I am overweight, and not because I had just had all my reproductive organs removed. You may not be able to see someone's disability on the outside, but that doesn't mean they don't have one on the inside. And maybe you should think twice before teaching your children to categorize and make fun of people.

In all my trips to DW I've never found a reason to complain about strollers or ECV's. I'm always just happy to be there. Try finding the positives in life instead of the negatives, it'll make you a happier person, and less judgemental of others.
