My DS - 3 weighs 45lbs and is 38" tall - I would like to purchase an umbrella stroller, that can accomodate his weight/height comfortably, something that will recline, has a shade, and possibly a basket underneath. Does anyone know of something that would fit this bill? Thanks

This has actually come up several times lately. Doa search for strollers and you will find lots of opinions. It seemed that the consensus for an older child was for Maclaren brand. I have the mac volo and it is amazing for a 52lb 47inch 5 1/2 yr old . All maclarens go up to 55 lbs. Good luck.

Most umbrella strollers, Maclaren included, have weight limits of 40 lbs. Peg Perego strollers can be used "up to 99 lbs or as long as your child can sit comfortably in it."

The Peg Perego umbrella strollers (Plikomatic or Pliko P3) are heavier than the Maclaren ones, but they are just as full of features. I would get the P3 if you want one-hand steering -- over the Plikomatic (aka Pliko)

Maclaren's site states that their strollers are up to 55 pounds. That is the reason I bought this stroller for my older DD, She is 52 pounds now and it still rolls like a dream with her and a sixpack cooler and misc. stuff in backpack.

They changed their weight limit while I was lacking off. Good thing it is now 55 lbs because a yr ago, they could only say 40 lbs and left so many parents with young but heavier kids not knowing what to do.

Thanks for the clarification.

No problem. :) I was pretty happy with that change myself. I wish I had known about Macs when my DD was younger. We only just got ours last May so weight was The big issue. Have a good day.

My DD4 is about the same size as your DS and I did try the stroller recommended by GoofyDad. I found it to be very difficult to steer while she was sitting in it and the handles a little too low for me. I ended up getting a Chicco Caddy umbrella stroller at Target for 50% off (endup paying 24.98) It has the sun shade and it does recline a little, but no basket underneath. I will probably just hang my backpack from the handles. It handles so well and weighs only 11lbs. It also comes with a rain shield and a carrying case in case you want to check it with the luggage.
I would say your best bet would be to shop around, have your DS sit in some floor models and see what feels right for you. Good luck!

Stroller queen that I am I also bought the goofydads stroller and agree with cepmom. It was hard to push and the handles were too low. Also my DD is tall and when she sat in the stroller the canopy was pushed up by her head. Really uncomfy. We ended up trying her in it for about 5 minutes and then gave it away as we had scuffed the wheels up in the 1st try. Live and learn. From then on she was brought with me to try out any stroller I considered getting. :)

We havent had a problem with our s. :( I'm sorry folks. Since we have ahd no problems wit hit I figured it was a good stroller. :guilty:

G00fydad it seemed like agreat stroller. Just not for what we needed it for. Gee do not feel bad. my DD was already 5 when I got it and tall. The Mac just fits her better. I hope you still love your stroller. Every person and child is different. Wow can you tell I am feeling guilty for making you feel bad. LOL.

another apology here, GoofyDad...I didn't mean to make you feel badly. My only point of posting was to try out the strollers you're interested in with your child sitting in it so you can get a good feel of how it will handle. My DD is almost 5 and I'm sure with a smaller child, your stroller is just fine. Mine DD is just too big for most strollers, but still too small to handle walking all day long at DW!

We have a Maclaren Quest that we bought to accomodate my 4 yr old DD who is 43" and 41.5 lbs... the umbrella strollers wouldn't budge, so we sprang for the Quest since all the websites I researched stated it went up to 55 lbs. It works WONDERFULLY! I only wished I'd discovered it a few years ago!!!!

Ya might be the stroller queen on this board, but just in case you don't know, there is actually a Strollerqueen. She has appeared on TV, interviewed by the WSJ, etc. on her passion and expertise on strollers. :)

But how is the handle height? and do your feet kick the back of the stroller or hit the brakes on the back wheels?

I bought this same stroller at Wal-mart right before our DW trip a couple of weeks ago. It was great for my younger daughter. My older DD liked to ride in it as well, although her head would not fit under the canopy. My DH didn't like it because the handles were too short. So, I ended up pushing DD3 in it most of the time. So, it is a good stroller for the price. We ended up buying a Graco for DD5 and it worked fine for her, she could pull the canopy over her head, it had a roomy basket, was easy to fold, and the handles were a bit longer so DH didn't have to hunch over to push it. Overall the Graco was better, but more expensive.

Wow. I was joking . That is so cool?weird? I think I will go with cool as my answer. Glad to see there is someone who is "worse" than me about finding the perfect stroller. Although my search for our family is over for now. The volo is it for DD since she is already 5. Either I will have to starrt looking for strollers for friends or have another baby. LOL

HAHAHA, that's exactly where I am -- either help people with their stroller needs or have another baby. Too crazy, eh?

I am 5'8" and my husband is 5'11", so pushing an umbrella stroller was so awful. For our last trip we bought handle extensions. They fit just about any umbrella style stroller and even have a cup and snack holder. Both Baries R Us and Kids R Us carry them. They were a life (or back) saver!!
