I have had an incredible amount of misfortune/family emergencies that I just cannot deal with work right now and need to take a stress leave. I know my doctor will sign the necessary papers, but what I need to know is the financial end of it. Anyone been through this and can help? My benefits at work only cover long-term, not short-term disability. I can't afford to go on EI because the money I make now I need to live on, there is very little left over at the end of the month. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry I don't know anything about stress leave, but I hope that everything that your dealing with works out for you.

Kaos Creator - I'm sorry to hear that you're having a bad time lately. It's hard to fight fires on every front at once, and I hope a period away from work would help you to feel better.

Most LTD policies have an exclusion period of e.g. 4 weeks or 8 weeks before you receive money from the policy. However, you can probably claim casual sick days to cover at least some of that time. Some companies will cover varying terms of the exclusion period, depending upon how long you've been employed there. Have you checked with your benefits/HR department? Maybe they can help you to work out something.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Do you have vacation time banked that could be used until you are able to collect benefits? I would definitely be talking to your HR department. There should be something they can do for you. Keep your chin up - and I'm sending lots of pixie dust your way.
