I should have asked the dr. today, but forgot. DS (age 3) has Strep and got an antibiotic shot this morning. How likely would it be for this to pass to DD (age 4 months)?
I think strep is pretty unusural in infants. Kids are normaly not contagious 24 after antibiotics. I would just try to keep you older child out of the babies face and toys apart for a day or two.
I got strep when my DD was 6 or 7 months old and the DR told me it was very unlikely that she would get it because of the way their oral structures are formed. Hope your DS feels better soon.
Thanks both. Luckily, DS just took a 5 hr nap, so I think the sleep should really help him at this point (and it helped me, after 36 hrs of him vomiting, I needed a break).
My doc said that as long as the baby doesn't drink from the same cup, or put anything in her mouth that her sick big sissy had had in her mouth that it would be unlikely that she would get it. She never did, thank goodness!
As others have said, strep is highly unlikely in an infant. It's not impossible, but highly unlikely. I can't remember the whole explanation but I do remember our pediatrician telling me something about infants having some kind of protection against strep that older kids don't have.
Watch yourself for symptoms though! Adults can catch it pretty easily. My kids have passed it along to me quite a few times!
Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for it passing to me - it's most likely DH will get it. I keep reminding him not to share food, glasses, etc., and he keeps forgetting. Oh well.
I got strep when my oldest was 3 months old. I was concerned about her getting ii, but my Dr said it is mot common in infants. I was also nursing so he said she was all set. She never got it.
I'm a NICU nurse, it is almost impossible. Infants throats and sinuses are not very susceptible to these types of infections. That being said-refusing to nurse or take a bottle as well as fever, are grounds for a doctor visit.
Well I can tell you it does happen. When my oldest was in kindergarten she came down with strep 3 times! I think there was a carrier in the class b/c kids in there just kept getting it. But anyway, my then 3 month old did get it from her sister. The Dr. didn't want to test her as she said how unlikely it was but I knew something was out of sorts with her and insisted on a strep test. The Dr. was surprised it was positive, but put her on antibiotics and got rid of it. So my advice: keep an eye on her and insist on a test if you feel something is wrong.
I am another mom who had an infant with strep throat. I had had strep and my 6mth old sons voice started to sound hoarse to me. When I went in I had the nurse do the quick strep test and when the dr came in he told me from looking in his mouth and just from his age that my son was fine. He said he would go check the results but he was sure everything was ok. Well he came back in and said he couldnt believe it but the test was positive. He wrote a prescription but wanted me to go to the lab to have another test done too just to be sure. Yes that test was positive too.
