streaming tv

Can someone explain the point of a cloud dvr? I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that I could essentially watch what I wanted to when I wanted to, why the need for a cloud dvr?
You need something to record the shows so you can watch what you want when you want.

Not all content is available on demand with streaming services.

Some streaming services include a DVR functionality, some charge extra, some are limited in the hours that can be recorded.

YouTubeTV is the most generous in DVR storage. It is unlimited for each family member part of the plan.

and can you skip the commercials like you can when you dvr with satellite?

Since we have cut the cord in our house I found that Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime are my main streaming apps for a total cost of around $25 a month. Hulu shows alot of current shows from the main broadcasters except CBS. I have learned to live without CBS. Another app to check out is Locast. They offer free streaming of local stations in select markets. You can go on their site Locast.org to see if they offer it in your area.
Me too. Hulu does air some SOME CBS shows but not current seasons. Right now they have something like 39 seasons of Survivor. I caught up on Mom, which I had actually stopped watching a couple seasons ago.
Hulu + Live does give you CBS. I know you both said you are on the basic plan, but I just wanted to put it out there for anybody who may be researching.

To the OP: Hulu + Live will give you HGTV & Food Network as well. I don’t know about how to get MLB.

We use Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime (including in our prime shipping subscription) and Apple TV (free for a year). It covers just about everything for us.

MLB blackouts are nuts. A friend moved to Eugene, Oregon and is an Oakland A's fan. He has games blacked out because he is considered within the home market......even though he is 525 miles away!

Is there anyway you can route your internet feed through a VPN to get around the blackouts? Then MLB thinks you are in Seattle rather than Sacramento.

so, it looks like youtubetv has everything I said I wanted, including mlb (undersanding the whole black out issue) amd I missing something? $50 a month and I get the networks, the extras I said I wanted, a cloud dvr, mlb...
What else might I want to know before I make a choice?

With YouTubeTV yes.

There was a period of time with CBS and CW in particular that if you recorded a show that was available as on demand when you watched, you were forced to watch the on demand version and the associated commercials. If you waited until the on demand version was no longer available, usually a few weeks, you were then able to watch your recorded version.

Recently the contract between YouTubeTV and CBS was changed to allow you to select the DVR version of the recording at playback and not force you to watch the on demand version.

Contracts between YouTubeTV and the networks can always change so the forced on demand option may return to CBS or other channels.

The only thing I think you are missing is that you should have done it 2 years ago!

I can't even imagine going back to traditional cable or satellite TV.

In my 2 years with YouTubeTV I have had a couple glitches for sure. There was a night my daughter called in a panic because she could not get The Bachelor finale to play. She could only join it live and could not start the recording from the beginning. YouTubeTV support forums lit up with complaints so I knew it was not unique to me. She was forced to miss the first few minutes and watch live. The next day it allowed her to play the recording. I can only think of one other time where we sat down to watch TV in the evening and there was an issue playing back some recordings. We opted to watch something else that night and by the next day everything was working fine again. No different then occasional problems I have experienced with satellite and cable providers.

I will suggest it to my friend.

2 years ago, heck a month ago I had horrible internet and this was not really an option.

I, personally, consider all the live tv options to just be another version of cable, satellite tv. Saving $20 vs Dish is still spending $50 more vs basic Hulu. For me it is not worth the extra money.

To each their own. Even with all of this, plus internet, we still save over $100 for the same channels vs Comcast. I’d rather get all the channels I want.

Most services have a seven day free trial. Do one a week and then you can compare who has the channels you want, their user interface, how their DVR system works, etc.

The only channel is miss from Dish is CMTmusic, which played music videos and other music shows. But with YouTube I still have access to the videos.
