This morning my husband and I noticed a strange humming noise coming from our basement. At first, we thought it was the florescent lights in his shop area. We turned off the lights, but we are still hearing the humming noise. We've narrowed it down the the corner where the main water line enters the house and the main sewer line exits. I turned off the main water line, but the noise did not alter or stop. There is nothing on the other side of the wall since it is the unexcavated area under our garage. The hum sounds almost exactly like florescent lights, but we can't figure it out. Anyone have any ideas? Can sewer or water pipes hum? :confused3

check your toilets to see if one is seeping through into sewer line, also, do you have a sump pump in your basement?

Hmmm... I'm not sure how to check that.
Yes, we have a sump pump but on the other end of the basement.

We were hearing a noise in the same area several years ago. an astute plumber traced it to a leak in the water line that comes to the house.

if you arent using one of the colored water cleaning tablets, you can add koolaid , or one of the blue water cleaning tablets to the back of the tank, and if its seeping the water in the bowl will show color if leaking, stay clear if not.

sump pump will connect into main sewer at some point, could be reverb check it as well anyway.

for got to add,, if you use koolaid,, make sure you bleach and wash it all out of the tank, as it will stain porcelon if left standing.

Thanks Froggy. We don't use the tablets, but I will try some today and see what happens.

The sump pump is not connected to the sewer. It collects water from the draintiles and then empties through a PVC into the backyard.

I think we should call a plumber to check the pipes and the sewer line. A neighbor of ours had a problem with the sewer backing up into his basement about 2 years ago. We certainly don't want that to happen to us.

It's the Tag Fairy! She's trapped!! Somebody do something...QUICK!!!

is that corner where your meter box is outside? I can hear the hum from the meter box in my bedroom sometime. also could someone have left a hose on outside. I can hear when the water is running outside....

I noticed a sound like that in our basement. It was one of the cable junction boxes/splitters that's mounted to the floor joist that was going bad. Any chance you have one in that area?

We had something like that happen and a plumber suggested changing the rubber gasket things inside the toilet. We did, the noise stopped. Weird but it worked.

Are there any utilities that run near your basement and do you have a transformer outside on a utility pole on your street. The sound from the transformer can travel on the wires.
