Nine pennies USED to weigh exactly one ounce. In 1982, The US mint stopped making copper pennies and started using zinc with a thin coating of copper. The newer pennies are lighter and really messed up the method of counting pennies by weighing them. All the other coins have had to maintain the same weight because vending machines need to "see" the same weight and size for coins in order to recognize them.
