We are flying America West in a few weeks and found that they charge $5 per headset!! After Jetblue and Delta's Song letting us use them and even keep them this kind of astounds me.

Does anyone know if you can bring headsets from home to use....will they work and are you allowed?

$30 seems incredible but I do need to keep us occupied for 6 hours - lol!

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that your own head phones will work. When I was going to New York via United Airlines I used my own head phones. The jacks are the same....I think. ;)

I'm not sure if they allow you to do so though.

No, I don't think your own headsets will work. Different kind of jack. Most airlines' headphones have a two prong jack that are connected together as one solid piece. I would bring your headphone anyway, just in case.

BTW, charging for headphones is more the norm than not on most airlines usually because your paying for a movie although I do remember getting them free sometimes if there were no in-flight movie. After my children were born, I rarely rent headphones anymore so it's possible that the jacks may have changed and your's might work. I am going off memory of my travels prior to children.

I would bring mine from home if I were you. I just flew United and they had two jacks, one that was double pronged and one that was for a single prong . I kinda of think that America West charges because it costs them to provide the headphones so they are passing that cost on to you since they are somewhat of a discount airline. I bought my own at Walmart for $5 and use them when I travel because I know I'm the only you who uses them, United left ones in the seat pocket to use, but god only knows how many people had already used them, yuck.

You can actually buy an adapter for regular headphones so that they'll fit into the 2-prong airline outlet.

As I fly alot, I also found it a great buy to purchase "noise cancelling" headphones. They range from $60 - $100. It is definitely worth the money. Most of them will come with a 2-prong adaptor to work with most airlines. I've never had any problems with airlines letting me use my own.

My kids used their own when we used Delta going to Orlando. The airlines still wanted to charge us $5, so be prepared, just in case.

AmericaWest does not have 2 prong headphones. Your CD,MP3 headphones will work just fine.

I remember using a one pronged earphone in a two prong jack and the sound only coming from one ear.

We just flew USAir from Pgh to Las Vegas, and they charged $5 for headsets. But you're allowed to keep them, and I guess you can bring them with you on future flights and not have to pay again.

Seems the issue would be whether you are being charged for the headphones (in which case bringing your own is probably fine) or the movie (in which case you'd pay no matter whose headphones you used). Of course, most flight attendants don't like being police officers, especially with kids, so it's always possible that even if it's the latter, they wouldn't make an issue of it if you had your own; however, that's not the greatest lesson for your kids. An e-mail to customer service ahead of time might clear that up.
