so, is this something I "need" or not? :) we do a fair amount of travelling and outdoor stuff. Planning a trip to niagara falls among other places. Anyone have one, pros, cons? thanks, maggie

If you're hoping to take any photos of Niagara Falls from somewhere other than the usual observation platforms, you may want to consider a waterproof camera... going on the Maid of the Mist or on some of the "up close" walks, you will definitely get soaked!

Depending on the wind, you can get a fair amount of mist even on the normal observation areas, but I doubt that'll hurt your camera, just put some spots on your lens.

Learn it here from another DISer, just put it in a ziplock bag and cut a hole to stick the lens through.

Aquapac do waterproof bags for different size cameras. You can use them underwater for a few metres too, I believe. Plus the bag is supposed to float in water if you accidentally drop it, not that I have tried this.

I used a large bag last year in Orlando. Kept my camera protected from water but also made going security a doodle because you could see exactly what was in the bag without having to open it all up.

You will need way more than a ziploc bag for Niagra Falls - an aquapack or waterproof camera are your best bet. Keep in mind that the "mist" will get all over you lens even with the pack so you will have to deal with water spots too.

so what y'all are saying is that I might want to just take my canon is s1 to the falls and not my sony digital slr? :) maggie

imo most of uptop you'd be fine(i've taken tons of photos there and just try to stay up wind of the mist as much as possible right by the falls although the ziploc/aquabag would be extra protection anyway) but i agree, you get drenched on the boardwalk, boat etc..a cheaper way to go would be get a waterproof disposable for those few photos and take the dslr on the other occasions. they have beautiful gardens etc there and one of the greenhouses ( the one by the old power plant, not the one closer to the whirlpool) has tropical birds that fly around loose inside which might be nice to have the dslr for as well as by the whirlpool and a little bit down from the falls where you see the mist, rocks but don't get so wet.etc:thumbsup2 .
