storing a laptop at CSR?

hi there,
just checked in and discovered that the in-room safe is more like a security deposit box...definitely not big enough for the laptop.
anyone have any general impression or experiences with storing a laptop atCSR-- e.g., using a safe at reception (if such a thing exists?), or just leaving it in the room somewhere inconspicuous, or leaving in the trunk of the car?

We aren't close to reception/El Centro, if that matters.

By the way, Mousekeeping keeping left some mini towel animals in the window -- complete with stick on eyes -- which promptly inspired an impromptu puppet show by our two year old twins :-)

thanks in advance for any tips...

I wouldn't leave it in the trunk of your car. I would recommend a cable lock for the laptop the next time you travel.

For this trip put it in a suitcase.

Left my laptop on the desk for 8 days without a problem in April 2005.

I've left my laptop sitting on the desk in many hotels without a problem. The only time it concerns me is if the desk is visible from the door and I know housekeeping leaves the doors open. I can picture someone grabbing it while the housekeeper is in the bathroom.

The few times I have been especially concerned, I have just locked it into my suitcase, assuming it would be difficult to sneak out the entire big bag even if they realized my valuables were in there. I usually don't carry my bag keys anymore since I never lock them. Guess I need to get some of the new TSA approved locks.

When we were at CSR, we always stored it in one of the dresser drawers. Never a problem :)

When we stayed there in May 2005, DH left his on the table (usually in his laptop bag) and we had no problem.

Can everyone stand to lose their laptop? Just because something didn't happen this trip doesn't mean it will always be that way.

A ounce of prevention is worth it when you are talking about laptops and hotels.

For me, the best way to take care of a laptop when I travel is to put it in my regular luggage when I leave the room.

I've never liked the cable locks because I believe that it tells everyone you have something particularly valuable.

If you are truly worried, you can leave it with the front desk, but I find that too inconvienent.

I don't bring anything I could not afford to loose, and if I really could not afford to loose my laptop, I would not bring it.

That being said, I've never lost anything from a hotel room.

I lock mine inside my suitcase. I keep a combination lock attached to the zipper pull of an inside pocket so I don't forget to take it.
