I have set myself a challenge for 2021, to watch all Disney movies, in chronological order.
Several of the older movies have the warning messages at the beginning:
This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.
Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.

I am currently at Saludos Amigos and the Three Caballeros. And I didn't immediately see what the negative depiction was. So, I decided to go to the website. And it has some good information about why it matters and how it matters. Only, I do think they are missing out on explaining where things went wrong in the past. They give the most well known examples with Dumbo, Peter Pan and Aristocats. Plus Swiss Family Robinson.
Am I missing something that I can look up per movie what the history is? I assume that for these two movies it's not a negative depiction of South American culture. Nothing so bad (as far as I with my white eyes can see) as the other examples. Especially when they use live action and they show footage the artists shot on their trips to South America, it seems authentic, the cartoons might be a little stereotypical.
My second guess is, it's the depiction of women in these movies. Also here I do wonder if it is such a bad message that it needs a warning message.
Which ever of the two reasons it is (or both, or maybe a third reason), I wonder, can we truly learn if we do not explain it? I am now left second guessing. It's nice that they have this website and make it look like they want to make the effort.
