Stops between Gatwick and York

We are flying into Gatwick, August 10, 2010, and then immediately renting a car and driving to York. Since I will have two kids with me, I was wondering if there is a stop or two that anyone can recommend so we can get a bite to eat and stretch our legs. Thanks for your help.

Speaking of renting cars, what is the cheapest, yet reliable rental car place?

If you are doing the journey mostly by motorway (M1?) then I think I'd just stop at a convenient service station. If you are unfamiliar these are places with petrol stations, toilets, cafes and some small shops (which sell stuff that you didn't even knew you would need on a car journey LOL!!). Some are a lot nicer than others but all have improved over the years. They are spaced every 20 or 30 miles along busy motorways.

I generally avoid Roadchef - but even these have improved recently.
