My 3 yo has has been sick off and on for about 4-5 days now (he's napping now). He's thrown up at least once since wed pm, twice yesterday and once today. I called his Doctor and we spoke in length about what he was eating (not much) and drinking (pedialite). My Dr. told me that unless he was completely lethargic and or not eating/drinking anything then he's probably got a stomach bug. There was no immediate need to take him to the ER since he is eating and drinking something. Is there medicine made for vomiting?

My other question is that is it normal to throw up for 4 days and not get "rid" of the bug? I've always thought these kind of things come and go in 24-48 hours. He had a bowl of cheerios before taking a nap and he's kept those down.

Thanks.

It is normal to have this kind of bug for several days. The last time DD had a stomach virus it lasted almost a week. Towards the end I had to take her to the doctor because she refused to drink anything and was getting dehydrated. He prescribed suppositories to stop the nausea and help keep things down. Luckily she got better quickly after that and we didn't need a trip to the ER. BTW, I recently read in Parents Magazine that yogurt with live cultures is a good thing to eat when you have a stomach virus. The cultures apparently help attack the virus and soothe any damage to the stomach from vomiting.

Hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

CED mom, great idea.

I have some yogurt w/cultures in my fridge. Maybe i'll see if he's interested in eating that since he does like to eat it occasionally, especially if i'm eating one.

There's not really anything you want to give a child to make them stop vomiting unless they are doing it very frequently (several times an hour) or are dehydrated. It's no fun to watch your kids be sick but the best thing you can do is offer fluids frequently in small amounts and let him sleep when he can. Some stomach viruses can last a week. Be sure you are very careful about hand-washing or you (or other family members) will get it too :(

I hope he's feeling better soon. It's great that he ate the cheerios. Maybe he's nearly over it now.
