DD 21 has had trouble since April an her Dr wants ascope done but can't until Aug 17. What relief or cure is there until then. She won't even travel far because scared to be sick, has sharp pain, only eats when she can and thats not much. She is sick of been feeling sick.

First just let me say I feel her pain, quite literally and Im sorry! I have chronic gastritis, a per-cursor to ulcers and it is quite painful. I just went through a huge flare-up. The worst (and longest running) on e I have ever had. The pain is almost unbearable and forget eating anything. Tell her to only eat things that will not be harsh on her stomach. No coffee, no soda, no tea, no spicy foods, no fatty or processed foods. Eat lots of yogurt, banannas, cucumbers(they are supposed to have a soothing effect on the stomach), plain rice, plain white toast, mashed potatoes, and applesauce. I also drink protein shakes made with protein powder and milk to add some much needed protein to my diet.

Recently it got so bad I got desperate and started doing some research online and found out that coconut milk was good for ulcers and gastritis. I found some in the international foods aisle of my local Walmart. I love coconut but this stuff is totally gross. With that said though in two days it has completely stopped the symptoms! I think it may be a miracle! I have drank 1/3 a cup twice a day and it really does help(especially if you take it before you eat). I have to hold my nose to drink but it has been worth it for me!

I didn't have an ulcer but I had gastritis. Essentially, the treatment is the same.

First, if it is an ulcer, they will want to test her for H. Pylori which is the bacteria that causes most ulcers. If she has that, she will be given a treatment regimin of 3 drugs, two of them antibiotics I believe, and one of them will be a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec or Nexium.

In the meantime, she could go buy a supply of Prilosec at the drugstore and see if that helps. The only problem is that it will complicate things as far as what the doctor sees on the August 17th with the scope. And you don't want that to happen.

For my gastritis I was treated with Prilosec and Carafate. Carafate is a liquid that puts a coating on the lining of stomach and protects it while it heals.

I swear by my Prilosec (or Costco's generic). If I run out, by the 2nd or 3rd day I'm in agony.

Just curious--do you know why you have recurrent gastritis? I had it diagnosed by endoscopy and my doctor was clueless as to why I had it. I had "fresh bleeding in the stomach" with it and he had no idea why. I had taken any ibuprofen six weeks prior. It's always really bugged me that I don't know why I got it and, honestly, I think for me it is recurrent because I do get flare ups.

I want to add no alcohol to the above named items. I also had to cut out a lot of dairy. I can eat small amount of cheeses and yogurt, but a glass of milk or ice cream will bring on an attack.

If your ulcer is caused by H. Pylori which it is in 9 out of 10 ulcers, it should be a simple course of medicine. It was for me. 2 weeks and you are fine. I had severe burns in my throat from reflux, and ultimately had stomach surgery to repair the faulty valve in my stomach. I've probably been scoped 10 times in my life. The ulcer never returned. The reflux pain is similar to ulcer pain, many times they are confused for each other.

A bland diet is not a blanket requirement. Some certain foods may not agree with you, so avoid those. But in general your stomach has acid in it. Do you honestly think your stomach knows the difference between celery and fried food? Acid is acid. It is going to suck regardless of what you eat.

I suffer from an ulcer and had a TERRIBLE flareup last year due to some stress. I thought I was dying. I couldn't eat anything for a week because of the pain not only in my stomach but the burning, scratching sensation came up my throat. It felt like whatever I swallowed, including water, cut my esophagus all the way down with a piece of glass. I lost 8 pounds in 1 week because I could not eat. Everytime I would try to eat, I would cry because I was so hungry but in so much pain. Very frustrating!!! Prilosec worked wonders but I was on a triple dose for a week before it started to work. No soda, no alcohol, no coffee or tea, no spicy foods. Eat things that are easily digestable. Good luck to you.

Mine is and was caused by chronic use of NSAIDS (ibupropen, aleve, etc.) and stress. My doc said its was something I would probably deal with my whole life because the lining of the stomach had already been damaged to some degree and flare ups would occur occasionally. I no longer use NSAIDS but still get flare ups. Mostly when I drink too much coffee and not enough water.

Prevacid just went over the counter and works really well as long as it's taken with some food. My last flareup was helped a great deal by eating Goya Lentil soup.

That's good to know.

I had been abusing NSAIDS for years. At some point, I started developing a hive whenever I took Motrin, so I had stopped the Motrin about 6 weeks prior to the scope. My doc was surprised that I had fresh bleeding as he felt that 6 weeks of the NSAIDS should have been enough. But maybe not.

Oh, I can no longer drink coffee. Puts me in absolute agony.
