Stomach bug

We just got back on May 20th. Had an amazing time. But one by one all 5 of us were hit with a stomach bug. Anyone else experience this?

My family almost always comes down with something after traveling, it's a combination of being exposed to lots of germs and your immune system being lowered by not being on your regular schedule and in your regular environment.

Happened one trip a few years back. Based on timing, we're pretty sure it was something picked up on the plane. Since then we are diligent with washing hands and surfaces, but as we all know, germs are out there, and sometimes they are airborne. Glad it happened AFTER your trip and not during!

We were there at the end of April. We have been lucky in all of our trips not to get sick while down there but we weren't so lucky
this past time around. Our oldest daughter had a stomach bug that affected her for most of the trip, poor thing. :(

We did one trip. We were very blessed that it was short lived and quite mild but it got us all. I was the only one that waited until we were back home. DS8 was about 4 that trip and when he was a bit nervous about anything his fingers would go in his mouth. He was hit first (and lightest) so I know that is what happened. It was after that trip that I stated packing a stomach bug care kit when we travel. Thank God we have not needed it since but it would have been very helpful that trip.

Out of curiosity, what is in your kit? when the kids have a bug at home it is usually crackers, ginger ale, gatorade, etc. Since we are driving I can always pack that stuff with me.

Here is my tip: Use lots of hand sanitizer while on vacation. We would bath in the stuff if we could! Next, take off your shoes as you enter your room and leave the shoes by the door. Lysol your shoes every time you come back. I can't tell you how many times I have seen people be sick at the park and then others walk through it, not knowing it. Avoid placing your hands on hand rails. Finally, at the park, avoid walking through odd wet spots on the pavement. I don't know what those are, and don't really want to know. Some might say I'm being germaphobic. I say I am just being observant.

I pack a roll of paper towels, wet wipes, trash bags, ginger ale, can of disinfectant spray, plain crackers, applesauce and extra PJ's for our youngest. We found the resort staff was GREAT at bringing us clean sheets in the middle of the night, and taking our nasty ones away. We tipped REALLY well. We tossed two pairs of PJs. There are laundry facilities but we simply did not want to deal with the nasty mess. He just slept in t-shirts and underwear the rest of the trip but of course you could buy new one on site.

DD7 spent 24 hours in misery on our trip last February. It started with the time-honored middle-of-the-night wake up call: "Mom, I'm gonna throw up." We think she picked up a fast-moving bug at the MK. But at that age, who knows what she touched? We tried to rally her the next day, but she was too sick. Fortunately, we were able to cancel and reschedule several ADRs without penalty at the last minute, and we had tacked an extra day onto our trip so that we would have extra flexibility in scheduling.

We were there the week before you. On the evening of day 2, my two year spiked a high fever and threw up twice. Her fever broke without meds and she was good to go for the rest of the trip. On the night of day 5, I had the exact same thing in the middle of the night but my fever broke quickly too. The next day was our last day so I really wanted to make it to the parks PLUS is was the day of our coveted Anna and Elsa FP+. I woke up and thought, okay, if DH can take the lead today and be the FP+ runner, food getter, and general grown up in charge I think I can do this. (I usually kind of run the show on our trips because I'm the planner and Disney geek in the family.) Anyway, of course, he woke up sick too. It was a tough day at the MK and we only made it for a couple of hours but DD met the Frozen ladies. It took me and DH several days to get over what DD blew through in less than 18 hours.

We try to be diligent about hand washing/sanitizing and I Lysol everything in our room as soon as we check in. I even use antibacterial wipes on the tables/high chairs at restaurants when we sit down. But DD is only two and of all things, I think she touched every trash can on property. If she got two feet away from us she was banging the doors on them. (Yes, I realize this is annoying and a weird kid thing. We tried.) And for some reason on this trip, she was putting her hands in her mouth more than she ever would at home. I was on her so bad about both things that I think she was doing it just to get a reaction from me. So I guess it was almost inevitable. :rolleyes2

It was the first time we've really been hit by a bug on any of our trips and between that and the crazy heat of our week, we had some tough moments. We had plenty of meds and stuff with us and housekeeping at Pop was awesome about bringing extra trashbags and towels. I did some unexpected laundry because of the mess. The required Olaf blanket was caught in the crossfire and we couldn't go a week without that. Oh well.
