Shop Rite has their can-can sale going on. I have already started to stock my pantry and freezer for Fall and winter. We had a big budget buster here. Our 26yo adult daughter was recently in an accident and she needed 15,000 in dental work. Yes we stepped up to the plate to save her teeth. Our gas prices are going back up food is getting more expensive and I just heard that beef will rise in price due to the drought in Texas. I have been cleaning out freezers and shopping the sales for a well stocked pantry and freezer. How do you stock for the Fall and winter?

I only buy a lot of what my family will eat. The only canned veggies we eat are corn in soup. But we do buy beans for soup and hummus. We also buy tomato products, including tomato juice, also for soup.

I'm starting to do the same thing. Have you noticed the increase in coffee? :sad2:

I LOVE soups, so we buy a few ham bones from HoneyBaked Ham. (If you've never gotten one before, they're REALLY meaty... I've made a sandwich or two with the meat before I use the bone and last of the meat for soup) And they're only $4.99. I know they're more in some places, but for me, they're one of the cheaper options unless I wanted to cook an entire ham. I buy them two at a time so that I don't have to make another stop another day. We can put away some split pea soup around here! Pretty much ANYTHING for soups or stews or your favorite "winter" meals (we love green been casserole in the fall/winter, no holiday needed). Rice or pasta are good any time of year but especially under heavy beef. Maybe you could start a search for ways to reduce the amount of meat you eat? My DH is about the biggest carnivore-type I've met but by introducing him to meatless meals SLOWLY, we're finding some that he enjoys. Or meals that are really a vegetarian dish with a small portion of meat for him (Like chicken stir fry that's almost all veggies and noodles... I only need 2 small chicken breasts for 4 big portions... or black bean burgers with slices of bacon leftover from breakfast)

Beef prices should initially DROP in price as a large volume of beef hits the markets as herds are sold off.

As the meat is processed, look for prices to rise NEXT year as the shortfall will negatively impact prices for the consumer then.

I was recently told by an Amish who's painting a house for me that oats have already gone up $3 because in this region (NE Ohio/Western PA) it was too wet to plant.

Some of the dairiers are already feeding winter stocks. I'd look for higher milk product prices, and in fact, saw that Giant Eagle's milk had gone up nearly 50 cents a gallon for the last I bought about a week ago.

I would say stock up if you can, I don't see prices going down on anything to soon:sad2::wizard:

I've filled my large pantry with canned tomatoes, beans, and vegetables from the can-can sale. Now I'm working on combining some of those with garden vegetables into recipes for storage in the second freezer. I'm also making bread and muffins to store in the freezer. Batch cooking saves me prep time and clean-up time versus preparing individual meals, so I have more time for other pursuits, including earning money. I'm using my food processor so much I decided to invest in a second work bowl for it.
