Stocking for Mom (and older people)

A toothbrush...always a staple in our house ;)
toothpaste
cotton squares (for nail polish, etc)
tea towel or kitchen wash cloth
bath sponge/poof
pumice stone

Can you tell we fill stockings from the HBA aisle? :rolleyes1

Another idea for the "difficult to purchase for": A new address book with the names, addresses, phone numbers (including cell phones) already filled in. My sister did this for my Nana (now age 87) and she LOVED it. All us grandkids have moved a couple of time since she started with her old address book, and it was a mess as she crossed out old info and added new info. The new book was neat and had all up-to-date info.

Have fun stuffing the stocking :santa:

I am loving this thread!! Making notes as I read it. I now have the car freshners on it, and chapstick, gloves, and scratch offs. I always have a hard time with stockings!!

A subscription to the local paper
extra reading glasses (my mom keeps them laying around different places in the house)
totes umbrella
vera bradley wallet on a string ( she loved this when my dad was in the hospital)

We got a calendar and filled out all the family birthdates too! DH's Grandma has 5 kids, 11 grandkids, and (so far) 15 great-grandkids. That is a lot of birthday's to keep track off.

-Post-It Notes (Vistaprint does personalized ones)
-Favorite candy (I always get my FIL licorice)
-Small coffee packs (Target Dollar Spot does these every Christmas)
-Bookmarks
-kitchen utensils (fun stuff like a silicone whisk or mini spatula)
-(This one may be controversial) A bottle of exotic beer. World Market sells individual bottles of beer from all over the world. I've bought DH Monty Python beer, Asian beer & other brands.
-If, when they were younger, they followed a sports team, something from that team. My grandfather liked having his OU plastic cup he would drink out of during games. Even a coaster to put that drink on or a shirt to wear on game days.

Audio books (books on Cd's)
cell phone cover in her favorite theme
stamps was a good idea you could add return address labels for her
Find a crafting item or jigsaw puzzle for her to do
Handle held electronic game like black jack, poker, tettris......
Jewelry cleaner
Manicure items: fingernail polish,remover,file, cottonballs
Pill case/organizer

If she has a favorite smell do a theme of it for example I like cucumber melon you could do liquid hand soap, sanitizer, lotion, lip balm, candle, room spray...
Or a product like Frebreze: linen spray, air freshener spray, plug in freshener, candle.

Not good for a stocking but the other day I had to change a light bulb it was up high and I had to unscrew things to get to it and it got me thinking how hard it would be for someone older to do this.
I think a good present would be to replace an elderly's persons hard to reach light bulbs with the newer long lasting bulbs. The one I used is suppose to last 8000 hrs. plus more energy efficient so saves them electric. Might as well check the smoke alarm batteries while your up there.

Since she has the Keurig now - Keurig sells sample packs on its website. Each one contains 5 K-cups in a single flavor. That gives you a chance to try a new flavor without commiting to a whole box. Click here to see the list.

Also good, if you have T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods store near you they often have lots of cute seasonal items, yummy food products, scented candles and so forth at inexpensive prices. I like to make gourmet food baskets out of items from there. Perhaps some cookies to go along with those teas, coffees and cocoas you might buy from Keurig?

Other thoughts - If she lives somewhere where it gets cold a nice new pair of mittens or gloves, a new scarf or hat. If she bakes either a gift certificate to King Arthur Flour company or Penzey's spices, or perhaps a bottle of high quality vanilla extract and some decorative measuring spoons. If she gardens perhaps a new pair of gardening gloves and some seeds. My mom is about that age and she still gardens, bakes, and a million other things. In fact until she had open heart surgery and got cancer recently she usually ran circles around me. I expect once the chemo is over she'll be back to doing that again.

For other people I've done "mini parties" in a stocking - things like a small bottle of wine or 2 bottles of beer or a small bottle of scotch etc, then some snack mixes (homemade chex mix, mixed nuts etc) and sometimes a glass or two if it fits or some mixers.

a Turvis Tumbler, you could slide in to the stocking and then fill that

coffee or tea ? I was thinking Starbucks Instant VIA ? they sell smaller packs for cheap at Walmart ( I think 3 or 4 pack for a couple bux )

extra reading glasses (my mom keeps them laying around different places in the house)

This is a great idea! I should get some for my dad as he keeps stealing my mothers (although of course he "doesn't really need them")

Gift card to get her hair done...or prepay if she has a regular stylist. It really perks my mom up to get her hair done:)

My mother is 77yo. There is very little that she really needs and she's a hoarder, so i really don't like to get her "stuff." She has a dog and 2 kitties, so she always needs to buy cat litter, pet food, and grooming services. A Petsmart gift card covers all that. Sometimes i give her a gc for her vet or the kennel she uses when she has to go out of town. In fact, any time we invite her up to see us*400 miles away* i call up the kennel and pay for a few days, to encourage her to visit often.
