For the past few years we have not exchanged gifts with DH's brother and his wife. We have just sent cards and called on the holiday. Strangely, last night I open the mail and in the card from BIL & SIL is a $100 gift card. I was floored. So was DH. So do we rush out and try to find something for them or just thank them graciously? The thing that is hanging me up is that we didn't discuss gifts this year so I expected things to be the same as past years, especially since this has been a somewhat financially challenging year for them. I would value some sage advice! Thanks.

Sometimes it's best to just say THANK YOU.

I'd call them and make sure the gift card was supposed to be for you. Especially since it came in a Christmas card. It's possible they meant to include it in someone else's card!

If it's really meant for you, I'd give them a big thank you, then deal with what to get in return!

I'd call them and thank them immediately. Perhaps after the holiday season, when things settle down a bit, you can treat them to an evening out...the four of you could go to dinner or somekind of play or somehting like that which might be available in your area.
