Sterilising baby stuff?

I'm having a nightmare trying to hold off weaning DD2 until we get back on 2nd October. She is now up at least once a night for a feed and then up at 6.15 am ish! She's only 18 weeks and as the new guidelines are 24 weeks we are a while off.

My HV said today to start slowly if I want to but I'm concerned about starting now when we go in 10 days or so...

I've never really sterilised on the go before as I've breastfed both my girls. I have bought microwave sterilising bags which you just add water too and pop in microwave, if we stay at the DLH do you think I'd be able to use the microwave to sterilise stuff as and when I need it (which may not necessarily be when restaurant is open?)...

I'm really in a quandry about it all but I'm shattered too so need to think hard about this one... In addition, as you can see from my sig (and most people know on here) we booked the Marriott as I'd thought a townhouse would be better but then we decided we'd like to stay at Disney.... However, now I'm thinking Marriott again but DH has said he's not keen on driving now (so we'd need to stay on site) etc. Please someone, just shoot me and put me out of my misery :sad2:

Thanks for reading ;)

I was exactly the same as you when we went to Spain.

We bought sterilizing bags from Boots that you just filled with cold water, added a tablet to them and then added the bottles.

Took half an hour to sterilize the bottles and then the water was good for 24 hours.

Sterilizing Bags

Thanks Mandy but I'm breastfeeding - it's for her (possible) eating utensils etc :)

Hi Patsy,
I used a travel steriliser. Its make is Babytec. I bought mine off ebay at the time. They are very compact & only fit 2 bottles at a time, so would be great for you. No fussing round with bags & tablets, just switch it on & let it do its job. I can't see the Disneyland Hotel having a microwave at your disposal all the time.

Good luck with holding off on the weaning. I'm sure she'll be fine. I waited the full 6 mths, but had given up breastfeeding at 4 mths so the formula is more filling & my daughter was a big baby too.

Hi Karen :)

Thanks - I'm sure as a Mummy you appreciate how I'm feeling right now - really don't know what to do for the best. I do want to hold off weaning not only because of the holiday (that would be a bit much!) but also because my DD1 is milk intolerant and we think DD2 is the same. I'd hate for any other intolerances to rear their heads as it's quite difficult having a child who is intolerant... :(

I'll have a look for one of those sterilisers - might be the answer actually :) I do have a steam steriliser but it's a humugous big thing from doing DD1's utensils etc.

Still debating about the Marriott (my poor Mum is having kittens that we haven't sorted it yet lol). We need to decide by Wednesday next week one way or the other!

Patsy :)

I rememered reading this thread on another forum a while ago -

I hope that will work - I've never used links here before.

I would also say that lots of babies have a big growth spurt at this point and do seem pretty hungry. I have 3 kids and didn't wean the youngest until 6 months. It was weird as it was so different to all the puree-ing i'd done before but we also have allergies in our family. he started to ask to be fed more often at around 4 1/2 months but then it calmed down again.

Thanks Miffy - funnily enough my HV said not to worry too much when we are away. DD2 is putting stuff in her mouth now - toys etc and DD1 keeps giving her them when they've fallen on the floor so I guess it's not much different. :confused3

I'm trying to hold off the weaning as I too agree about the growth spurt but it seems to be going on and on - she's a very big baby and seems mighty hungry. Vicious circle though as I'm tired so my milk suffers.

Anyway, I'm sure the DLH will be as helpful as they can be if we go for there :)

Thanks again for all your advice and help it's been great :thumbsup2

i have used the cold water sterilising bags and the microwave sterilsiing bags in the past ,both were good

but the microwave ones more handy and quicker

not so keen on steri bottles as we found they leaked a bit during feeding ( round the teat ) but did the job on the plane :)

there are mircowaves in the reasturants where you have breakfast, theress also rooms in some of the hotels with them in there like little utility rooms with ironing board fridge microwave in them set among the normal rooms for all to use.

theres even microwaves in the park resturants normally at either end near the knives forks etc at the counter sevice ones

hth terri xxx

I can second the boots sterilising bags-they are great and you can just hang them on the bathroom door if you are in a hotel-you can use them either for bottles or just to sterilise eating utensils etc-they really came in handy for us when dd was 7mths and had her first trip to disney.

I do believe than in the Disneyland hotel you can request a steriliser but not 100 percent on that -have only been offered kettles and bottle warmers when we have stayed in the other hotels.
:)

Thanks again. I've never used a cold water steriliser thingy in my life?? The travel one looks great that Karen recommended - it's just for small pots and spoons etc.

Daisybeetle - you can request bottle warmers but I don't think you can request sterilisers - might email them and ask.... Then again, might be worth buying a travel one in case we go again ;) :rotfl:

That's not a bad idea - then you'd have to go again to get your money's worth!
:)

Or... when you request for a kettle for the room, perhaps you can try asking for a big bowl as well so that you can pour hot water into it and soak the bowls/cutlery in it for a few minutes or if they can't provide a bowl, just pour hot water over the plates etc? It's better than not sterilising plus it saves you having to bring sterilising stuff with you. Just a thought anyway.

When I went on holiday and was weaning my 2, I took a large tupperware type tub and cold water sterilising tablets. You can pack the tub full of various baby stuff in your suitacase so it doesn't take up much extra room.

Yes I did that as well

Got a travel steriliser today so thanks for all the help :)

PS - I emailed guest relations and asked about a steriliser at the DLH yesterday - haven't had a reply :(

For what it's worth, I've never heard of anybody sterilising feeding utensils! I certainly never did it with either of mine (5 and 1) and none of my friends ever did either. I'm fairly sure that all HVs will tell you the same. You will be perfectly fine with washing well (hire a kettle and just run under boiling water if you're really worried) then buy one of those cutlery travel cases thingies and then you know they'll stay clean all day. Honestly, I really, really think it's unnecessary to sterilise spoons.

And to make you feel better, DS turned 1 last week, eats like a horse and still feeds twice a night, so weaning may make no difference either!

Thanks Tinkjon - I actually held off weaning her. My HV said to sterilise cutlery etc for the first month or so but tbh she's putting stuff in her mouth anyway so it does seem a bit pointless... :thumbsup2 I can't recall how long I sterilised DD1's stuff for - not long I think!

the "recommendation" is; feeding bowls / spoons etc til 6 months
then bottles / cups used for milk; until 12 months

:)
