My dad was married before he married my mom and he and his 1st dw had a son. My mom has always told me the son is my half-brother. That if she had been married before and had a son, the son would be my step-brother. The older I get the more the term half-brother just sounds weird.

Has anyone else heard of a half-sibling?

She's right my friend. Step is by marriage only. Half means that half of him came from the same place that you did. :)

I have four step-sisters. We have no biological parents in common.

Shannon, are we twins or something? I have the very same thing. We call him my step-brother.

Then all my life I was told wrong. Oh well.

I've got 2 half brothers & a half sister....

I was born before marriage & then she had 3 others after marriage, but we only have the same mother, they all have the same father.

I was adopted at birth, as she was only 18.

My oldest brother is my half-brother. We have the same Mother and different Fathers. I don't ever even think of him that way though, he's just my bubba to me. :)

I only have sisters and brothers. I don't believe in fractions. The fact that we have different fathers is irrelevant to me. I have only one sister who has the same father as I. But I have two sisters and two brothers :)

There is more than just a name to separate my brother and I. We don't have a good relationship. I wish I had a brother that I could have had one with.

Today is my half-brother's bday. I've seen him about 3-4 times my whole life. I'm not sure I'd know him if I ran into him and my mom didn't say "There's your brother Michael." His name and bday are the few things I know about him.

Lea Ann, my mom was right about something?:p Actually she was half right.;)

LOL, ok, sorry. Let me go fix that.

Hi! If your parent had a child with anyone other than your other parent, then that child is your half-sibling. That sibling still has half the same genes as you.
If your mother "had been married before and had a son", then that son would still be your half-sibling.
A step- brother/sister is the child of a step-parent, i.e. no blood relationship.

I have two 1/2 sisters. One is my father and step-mother's. One is my mother and step-father's.

I have one half-brother, two stepbrothers, and one "full" brother. But I do not really care about the fancy titles, they are all my brothers, even if they do act stupid when they all get together. :)

My mom has an identical twin. So, genetically, my cousins are my half-brothers.

You're right it does sound funny! I have a half-sister and Dad re-married so now I have 3 step-siblings.

And wouldn't you know I'm still the oldest!

My older three children were fathered by my ex H, the youngest my DH. I am so happy they consider her their sister, and she her sister and brothers, period. I've never heard them say the word half. But technically, that's what they are to each other, half siblings. We've tried to treat them exactly the same and have no favorites. Maybe that's why they feel the way they do. :)

I'm from a family where dad had 6 kids, his wife passed away. Mom had 4 kids her DH passed away. Then they married and had me! So I guess I have 10 half brothers and sisters- but we all just considered ourselves brothers and sisters!Even the older kids who would be step brothers to each other have never used that term in referring to each other.

I technically have 4 half brothers, 2 from my mom and 2 from my dad, but I never refer to them as 'half'. I have a sister and 4 brothers :D

three oldest siblings were from my mom and dads previous marriages.....it was a yours - mine and ours family.....I asked my mother why I didn't know ahead of time and she said......it never dawned on her to talk about it......we were one family and I have never ever used the half brother step brother or sister routine..

Pumba, I love that movie (Yours, Mine, and Ours).:)

I guess if I was raised having my oldest brother around, I'd feel the same way as most of you do about not distinguishing between whole brother and half brother. My SO has 3 half brothers and a half sister (as well as 2 whole brothers) but he always refers to them as his brothers and his sister. He grew up with them right there. I think my oldest brother (half brother) would prefer I refer to him as my half brother.
