Has anyone been to one of these stores? Is it like TJ Maxx and Marshalls?

No not really. Before they started advertising they were a really cool store with unusual clothing finds in them. I used them to find items to enhance my wardrobe (unusual shirts, jackets) as well as upscale shoes at a downscale price. It seems that since they started advertising they've gotten cheaper on their clothing offerings for women. Still pretty good for men and the shoes are still good. They also have interesting household items.

As for TJ Maxx et al...the store is much more attractive than that.

I totally agree. It's a higher-end TJ Maxx/Marshall's. You can find some really interesting items in there.

Love Stein Mart! There;'s a boutique in town and if I see something I want and am willing to wait a couple of weeks, I go to Stein Mart and save 50%.

I find Stein Mart to be laid out more like a traditional department store, though you do still pay at the front like a TJM. Marshalls and TJ Maxx just to sort by item in clothing. For instance, pants are in one section by size, but in Stein Mart they tend to be sorted in smaller racks by designer. I also love the designer boutique section which is way more upscale than anything found in a TJM or Marshalls.

They have the best costume jewelry selection at good prices, too. I love their household section and they have really nice gifty kind of stuff too.

We have a Stein Mart near my house and it seems to be the place for the elderly ladies to hang out. Seriously. All the clothes in this particular store seem to be for the 70+ set. The clothes in the window are all matronly and well not attractive.

Sounds like other people don't have the "old lady" Steinmart. Around here it is a ver old lady store. I went in once and left without buying a thing.

I sort of agree...I walked in and out...seemed a little pricey too.

There are several stores in the New Orleans area. One seems to cater to an older crowd. I guess it depends on where the store is located.
