I just throw fresh bluberries in the bottom of my bowl and put the hot oatmeal on top of them. The berries are warm and burst, sweet and healthy in your mouth after a minute or two. More fiber and anti-oxidents. No sweetener needed.
DH loves steel-cut oats, but the stuff I buy has to cook for 25 minutes! Not gonna happen at 4:45 am when he gets up!
I make a big batch on Sunday night, divide it into Tupperware containers, and refrigerate. He pulls one out each morning and heats it in the microwave. Works for him....

I did that too since I'm up at 2 am and have to be at my desk at work at 3 am.
I just put a little non-fat milk on it, because the whole reason I eat it is to get away from the sugar and other stuff in other cereals. I'm on the edge of diabetes and fruit, other than an occassional apple, is forbidden. According to my doctor, broccolli is the miracle food, but not about to put it on my oatmeal!
Steel cut oats are closest to the original form you're going to get - it's the original form toasted and cut up into chunks. Rolled oats are made by steaming the original form and then rolling them into flakes.
I recently just started eating steel cut oats, so I'm glad you made this post! So far I like putting in some Trader Joe's Honey Apple Butter and cinnamon. My next ambitious try is going to be TJ's Cookie Butter with bananas.
