Steak Lovers: Yachtsman Steakhouse vs Shula´s.

I agree Shula's has good steaks BUT

Prime is a USDA grade of beef, has objective standards and is independently graded. Shula's admits their beef is sub prime in one category and only claims their beef exceeds Prime in the other categories. Shula's claims aren't verified by anyone. Keep in mind Prime beef served in restaurants like the Palm at least meet Prime standards
and may very well also exceed government standards in one or more categories.

Thanks Lewis but if Shula's exceeds Prime in 7 catagories and underachieves in 1 it would seem that perhaps Shula's claim of 'better than prime' has some merit.

Oh, Kay, Peter Lugars? You like being served by rude waiters??? This I just don't understand.:confused3

We are eating at Yachtsman in September and really looking forward to it!

We are big steak lovers - and go to Luger's, Old Homestead, etc quite often. I'm really hoping that Yachtsman will have great steak and a good touch of Disney magic that a chain (like Shula's) won't have.

The best steak I've actually ever had as at a small Italian steakhouse in NY's meatpacking district. If anyone wants the name, let me know. It actually may beat Luger's as my fav steak ever!

Well, I think the steak will dissappoint you whereas Shula's would not but then again you'll have a much better chance of getting that always magical bug in your salad (and a staff that won't care a bit) at Yachtsmans.:rotfl:

Disney is as much about theming as food. I don't think the steaks at Le Cellier are much (any?) better then Outback but the dining experience is superior.

I doubt the steaks at Yachtsman are as good as steaks in places like the Palm or even Shula's but some people may like the atmosphere, not to mention the opportunity for extra protein in your salad.

Disney has found they don't need to staff the GF for 4 or 5 star service in order to get 4 or 5 star pricing. Disney has found they don't need to have great food in order to charge premium prices.

Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Odd that no one cared when you got a bug in your food. You seem so nice I'd imagine waiters would bend over backwards to make your experience pleasant!

Better than Luger's?!? Without crossing the river? Alright, give it up! I just might hit it this weekend if it sounds good!

ETA: Ever try the Knickerbocker in the West Village? Steaks there definitely hold their own....

Shula's may (and I do mean may) have a better steak than Yachtsman but I keep going back to YS every trip. I've found the staff to be exceptional (ask for Susan...eithor tall Susan or just Susan, both are great). The meal is always enjoyable. Plus, the Yachtsman has better atmosphere.

I really think so! It's called Macelleria and it's on Gansevoort. Enjoy!

I am not fond of Yachtsman, quality was not great and service the night we were there was definitely lacking.

I do think Shula's has better quality, also a bit pricey, but depending on the server it might be not be as friendly as a Disney restaurant.

Wow! Was that a shot or an a compliment? :confused3 You need to use the smilies if your going to express tone correctly.:thumbsup2 Now, if that was indeed a compliment, thanks!:) I am a wonderful restaurant guest, if I do say so myself! I love food and great waitstaff are ALWAYS appreciated. I think they are part of the dining experience as opposed to some who believe they should be seen and not heard. I always tip 20% minimum for anything approaching average and up to 30% for exceptional service. I will somethime reduce a tip if service was just lousy but I don't think I've ever gone below 12%. Now if your comment was a shot and you think I'm a rude person, well, you can reread the above.

As for the bug, it wasn't me but a recent poster reported this and got totally ignored (you can use the search). They charge way too much $$$ to nochalantly overlook something like a bug in your food, IMO. I posted a review of bluezoo a while back showing how a first class restaurant deals with inconsistancies.

Yachtsman's has a great ambiance and a good CM can go a LONG way toward a good night and perhaps you'll get lucky with your cut of beef (obviously a lot of people do). Bon apetit.

For those who are used to and appreciate the fine steakhouses of NYC- I think you will be disappointed by the quality of the meat at YS. That being said, it is a great restaurant and a great dining experience- just more disney than foodie (if that makes any sense).

As long as we are debating steakhouses- I have to stay true to Smith and Wollensky's, it's a long time favorite, although Quality Meats is a close second!

To the original poster- if you have kids, YS might be the better choice. Shula's is more of a dining experience, and takes longer. My 2 at 5 and 2 can't really sit through and enjoy the whole dinner without me entertaining them. Handsdown the better restaurant is Shula's though. QUality and wine seleciton are terrific.
