Sensitive topic for some...... I need help with staying "regular" if you know what I mean. I have a very irregular bowel and even when I am eating right I often can go days without going which just isn't good. My husband who eats the same things goes like 3-4 times a day. Any helpful tips on getting fiber in the diet? Also, has anyone tried the fiber that you can sprinkle in your food? Does it work? Thanks for the help and advice.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your problem. I don't have answers so much as questions for you. Can I ask you how many servings of raw vegetable you are eating every day and which vegetables you are choosing? Also, how many fruit are you eating and which ones? Lastly, how much bread and or bran products do you eat everyday? Does this happen to other people in your family?

One thing that REALLY helped me was starting my day with smoothies. I take stoneyfield vanilla yogurt and some frozen fruit (usually blueberry or mixed berry) and mix it up in the blender or smoothie maker. Near the end I sprinkle in a tablespoon or so of flaxseeds purchased at the local whole foods store. (The flaxseeds have a nutty flavor - much better than the fiber "sawdust" taste)

That and a couple tall glass of water a day and some movement works ever time! :thumbsup2

I can totally relate. I've even upped my fiber intake to try to help things along. Some days it helps and other days it doesn't. I have found that eating fresh veggies helps a bit more than fiber alone. My family makes fun of me because things don't go anywhere very fast. In fact, I brought most of my WDW vacation food home with me........

I found I really like the Fiber One cereal bars. They have 9 grams of fiber. The Kashi cookies are pretty good as well. I try to have one bar a day so I know I'm getting a good amount of fiber. (They're only 2 Weight Watchers points, if you're following their plan.)

Good Luck! If I find anything else that seems to help, I'll send the info alone. (I was going to say "I'll pass it along" but thought better of it!! :rotfl:

This problem is pretty rare for me...ahem...
However, I've heard that yoga helps keep everything doing what it's supposed to do. I just started Yoga Booty Ballet, and I really feel different on days after I've done the yoga section.

the number one thing for me is, Drink a lot of water, and Exercise. Also are you on any meds? I was on a specific muscle relaxant that gave me the same problem check with your Dr/Pharm and see if that may be part of the problem.

You asked about the powder fiber. I bought it. The Fiber sure powder. It is white and melts fast into something liquidy. And i honestly don't notice anything, taste wise. I've added it to brownies, yogurt, and sauce. I also bought the Fiber One bars. They are really good. I like the peanut butter ones a lot. That being said....I don't feel like I'm any more regular with all that than I was before. Actually a few days this week I felt less regular. I mentioned it to my sister and she said taking fiber supplements made her gassy and no movement. So not to discourage you from trying these things. But they don't seem to work for my family. Water, some exercise and fresh vegetables seem to work the best for me.

HTH. Good luck!

I got this great advice at my hairdresser's--no kidding (where else would we go to get advice? :)

Anyway, I use flax seed but it has to be the milled or ground flax seed (Specifically Hodgkins Mills I think it is not sure of the spelling). I sprinkle the serving portion each morning on my oatmeal. My Mom uses it and she says for her it is the best she's tried so far. the person I hear it from uses it at more than one meal/day. Keep in mind though that it has calories and if you are concerned remember the basic equation calories out must be less than calories in to effect any weight loss.

Also, definitely up the fruit, veggies, water and exercise. It all plays a part.

I like the flax seed recommendation, too. I even sprinkle it on PB&J sandwiches (on whole wheat of course!) and yogurt parfaits.

It can be normal to only 'move' every couple of days. Are you feeling discomfort? Have you spoken w/ your Dr? Regular just means regular for you.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on this but for me one thing I have found that really works for me is the Omega 3-6-9 along with eating an orange a day and my 8-8oz glasses of water a day. I take the Omega before I go to bed at night then once I've been up for about 1/2 in the morning my system flushes out and then again after I eat something for breakfast.

This is very old fashioned but it has helped me a lot. 6 or 7 prunes in the morning. About an hour later one of the new fiber one bars with a banana and a lot of water throughout the day. ALso add as much fruits and veggies as possible,

Just chiming in w/the Fiber One bars...lots of fiber in those babies and very tasty and only 2 points on WW! But beware...one a day should do ya'. :rotfl2:

I've been dieting and exercising since last November. I've been on a program supervisied by a dietician with lots of protien, fresh fruits and veggies. I usually start the day with a bowl of shredded wheat but in spite of this for the past month I have had the same problem you are experiencing. My dietician suggested I up my water intake but that really didn't seem to help. My doctor suggested a fiber pill every night at bedtime. I tried that but had a heck of a time swallowing those babies. I tried Metamucil powder with 8 oz of water at bedtime and that didn't help. Finally I bought some Fiber Choice chewable tablets. They are orange flavored and easy for me to take. The best part is they really seem to work. I alternate days and take one a day every other day and two a day on the other days. I think I paid $11.50 for 90 tablets. Hope this helps you - I know how you feel!
