Now here's a creative way to budget, just get all your neighbors to pick up the tab  One of my coworkers is off today because his livein just had their baby. It is premature and only weighs 3 pounds. I remarked to someone that even with our insurance picking up most of the tab a bill like that could be a real budget buster. The guy said that our coworker didn't have to worry about it because they never got married, she is on welfare and the state is paying for everything

This isn't some poor girl who was abandoned, they have been living together for years and this is their 2nd child together (the state also paid for the first one) All legal, too.

I've heard the old saying about not paying for the butcher when the meat is free but this ups that. Not only is his meat free the state takes a portion of our meat and gives it to them also. What a country :headache:

This isn't the first time I've heard of a situation like this, just the latest. Years ago when I was living up in NH one of my coworker's had a girlfriend who made the local news. She was complaining about the state not giving her money for doctors. She had 4 kids and whenever one of them got a fever or the sniffles she had to take them to the emergency room, which cost a lot more money. Her argument actually made sense but all the people at the plant saw was a girl who was living with a man making over $100k/yr leeching off of the taxpayers. A bunch of angry calls were made to the paper and they had to issue a statement in the next edition explaining it: they weren't married and they weren't his children so shut up and pay (well they didn't put it that bluntly but that was the gist of the answer). A shame to see people like this gaming the system when so many responsible people are struggling to make ends meet.

Just had to vent :upsidedow

Sooooo... only married people should have premies?

I don't think the OP is saying that single people should not have preemies, I think she is commenting on the fact that she is receiving state benefits because she is single. I agree with the OP. If you are living like a married couple then you should not be using state aid that is intended for single people. I see it all the time around here, young girls with babies and no husbands that are using state aid and getting lots of stuff for free. Young married moms have to provide everything on their own. It doesn't seem fair. My DD is single and can not work full time due to health reasons, she can not get insurance through the state. If she had a baby she could go on Badger Care and have her medical expenses paid. Makes no sense to me.

My sister in law is a prime example of this. Three different kids with three different dad's. She thinks this time she has found "the one" but refuses to marry him because she will lose all state benefits. She is very upfront about it with all of us saying she would lose everything she gets from the state (medical, vision, dental, and food stamps) if she marries him. It really burns my butt. Heck...she is living a better life than most working folks with all the benefits she gets.

In our area, it is very common to not get married and have babies. Our state gives medical cards to anyone who is pregnant and doesn't have insurance (Kidcare) and it really doesn't matter who you are (you don't even need a Social Security number or anything). So as long as your paychecks show your income is under a certain amount, the medical card is yours. The people are even told to reduce their work hours for a couple of weeks so that their paychecks look like they make less than they really do, so they can qualify. Then the baby is still covered for a certain period of time after it is born (a year I think).

I'm sorry but I don't see the problem. Honestly I'd rather it be Harding working AMERICANS than the folks who just crossed the border with their 6 kids!! Sorry, I had to vent I live in TEXAS!!! It is soo hard for working class to get any benifits because "others" are getting most of it!!!

I hear ya!

Ugh... that just turns my stomach. This aid is there for people who NEED it, not people who abuse the system.

My good friend, she got out of an abusive marriage, the day her divorce was finalized, she lost her job. She's been on unemployment and gets hardly anything in child support because her ex-DH has a child from a previous marriage, and his mom gets "first dibs" on child suppport (they're well-off... ugh.) My friend can't get any aid because she makes too much on her UNEMPLOYMENT... she's barely making it with her 2 kiddos. What gives?!!

So, by not being married and qualifying for benefits, that means she doesn't NEED the benefits?

It is NOT legal to abuse the system. If you know that someone is, please report them to the proper authorities. Threads like this always bring out the people who know someone who is abusing the system, but these people rarely do anything about it. If it truly upsets you -- please report them.

If you were walking home one evening and someone stuck a pistol in your face would you feel better handing over your purse to an American? That is essentially your argument, you would rather be cheated by a citizen than a noncitizen. Personally I would rather not be cheated by anyone. Then it would be easier for the ones you are sticking up for, the hard working people who play by the rules.

If she's living with the guy and being supported by him in any way, yet not claiming his support in order to get her benefits, she's cheating the system and basically stealing our money. It's disgusting.

:rotfl2: I'm with you American or not, I'd rather no one cheated me!

Wow. Just wow.

If you are living with the FOB and you are not claiming his income, then IMO it is cheating the system. Both incomes should be claimed IMO. It should be based on need, whether you are single or married.

Oh how I hate these stories...

I know there are those in need out there. I try to remember that, but golly!!

DH works at a grocery store. You can only imagine the 1st of the month. Loads and loads of stereotypes being fulfilled.

My parents are landlords. The people who take advantage of the system... it is amazing. They qualify for state aid, don't pay rent, won't move out, damage the apartments, claim their kids ate lead paint. There is little protection for landlords in this situation.

I help out at school. Head lice is a constant problem. Their are kids who always have it. It's so bad, the school doesn't send home notes. Instead of getting into the homes and helping these folks get rid of it, the kids continue to come to school. It's costing individual families $50 to get treated, house cleaned, etc... I wonder how much $ has been spent by decent families.

My sister is a PICU nurse. Her stories are AMAZING. If these people are so smart at beating the system, why can't they get JOBS?@?!?!?!?!?

My friend has been a social worker for 17 years. She is now dealing with the grandkids of some of her FIRST clients. 3 generations... wowza!

The whole system needs an overhaul.

I want the people who need assitance to get it. I do have a heart. There are those in need.

There are also many, many, many free loaders.

Wow. Just wow.

Wow indeed. How anyone can live with themselves cheating the system is simply amazing. If they're living together and she does claim his income as part of her support and still qualifies for assistance - great - that's not cheating. But if she's living with him and he's paying for housing, food etc, then she needs to be honest about that and not be essentially stealing from those of us who ARE honest. I'm not sure how anyone could have a problem with that.

Retired from the welfare business. The federal rules for food stamps and medicaid are stupid. If you are not married, your boyfriends income does not apply to you and your kids. Things change if you have a kid together. But for preganacy medicaid, those chosing not to get married have it made. Daddy's income does not count. I cannot tell you the number of times I had to deny PG medicaid to a married couple, but give it to someone who is not married, and they had the same income!! It can be a disgusting system and needs a big overhaul!!!

I don't think the OP was talking about HARD WORKING Americans.

Since you have experience, I have always been curious about how illegal immigrants in our state can get a medical card. They don't need a social security number, so basically, just an address and no job gets them a card??? I just don't get it! I live in IL by the way.
