My DS is five and in preschool. Every little germ that goes into that school seems to get to him and therefore, the whole family. What can I do to keep us healthy before and during the trip. I know all of the "normal stuff" like hand washing .. but does anybody have any other wisdom they might be able to offer? Your input is appreciated!

Make sure they get plenty of rest, fresh air and eat well.

If there are a lot of crud going around the preschool, I might would keep him home the week before just to be sure.

Normally, we use Airborne as a preventative for 4 or 5 days before anything important that I wouldn't want to miss out on. Of course, when getting ready for our trip to Disney last June, I packed it but forgot about us taking it the week prior. Naturally, since I overlooked this, it started with DS the day before we left but since we were driving we gave him advil to keep him comfortable and left as planned.

We figured he could sit and watch tv on the couch or sit and watch dvds in the van for three days. It went through everyone in the family for about two days on the road except DH who overlapped our first day there. I, of course, managed to get the worst case in the middle of our trip necessitating a trip offsite to a clinic and missing our Epcot day.

On all other occassions - I swear by Airborne. I give the kids 1/2 an adult since they hate the grape flavour of the kids one.

I don't know if your children take vitamins, but that has seemed to really help our family. As a matter of fact, we ALL take vitamins (Costco brand - chewables for the DS's and vitamin packs for DH and myself). That, plus natural vitamin D from the sun. Good luck! :goodvibes Also, when your children return home from school, have them change their clothes immediately and wash not just their hands, but their faces as well. HTH!

Ok, this is going to sound crazy to some. But we don't tell our DD that we're going on a trip until a day or two before. Why? Because she gets soooo keyed up about it that she starts losing sleep. (She gets screaming nightmares whenever she is stressed or worried about something). And when she loses sleep, she gets run down... when she gets run down, she gets sick.... you get the picture.

Silly I know. But that's our situation!

Lots of sleep. Low stress. Load up on Omega-3 (some milk, eggs, and spreads are supplemented with it. It's also abundant in fish and flax seed.) Complete multivitamin for everyone, additional Vitamin D supplement if you're in a winter climate, and echinacea for you and any other adults in the household. It's what we do, and we are hardly ever sick. DH works with people all day, and DS7 is in first grade, so it's not like we're not exposed to anything.

Good luck staying well, and have a great trip!

Actually, I think this is really a good idea. I don't like to tell my children far in advance either, especially the LO - his concept of time is very limited at the age of 3.

as a :teacher: i really notice how the kids can be getting themselves sick. it's so common to see them touching their eyes, nose, mouth, and putting things in their mouth. They are atleast teaching the kids to cover their cough or sneeze with their sleeve but a lot don't and the poor kid right next to them breathes it right in.

good luck!
