Was browsing Facebook today and a friend linked to an article about Neti Pots being linked to spreading brain eating ameoba from tap water.

For those who don't know, Neti Pots are basically like tea pots but are used to irrigate the sinuses. You basically pour water into your nose; that's what's allowing the amoeba to get into the system. They suggested using only boiled or otherwise purified water in Neti Pots to avoid this.

Who knew this problem could actually be linked to tap water? It's kind of scary!

I just read that and the podcast was the first thing I thought of too! People have told me to try that for my allergies but I never liked the idea of putting water in my nose. Now I know why!

The Neti pots work and are safe - they specifically tell you to use purified or distilled water - NOT tap water. By using this during his allergy season, my son is able to feel good and not be on allergy meds for the first time in years.

I've always used Brita water for mine. I wonder if that's enough?

I, too, thought of Pete immediately when I heard this. Just what he needs, something else to rant about...

I have to say, I'm sure Neti Pots work. I have many friends who swear by them. I've never used one as I can barely drink without it ending up on me. I can't imagine what would happen if I tried pouring something in my nose!

Interesting that they recommend purified or distilled water. I guess, as with any product, if you're using it correctly, you're good.

Yeah, I do realize that. I was just trying to justify my fear of putting water up my nose! ;)

NO! Brita only helps the taste, it does nothing against microbes. Use only sterile water for neti pots. Either buy distilled water, or just boil the water you intend to use for a few minutes.

Amen. Drives me nuts when stories are posted to create FEAR in people, and it doesn't even tell the whole story.

I use my neti all the time and yes, you should only drink, gargle, or pour up your nose CLEAN water
