Stay At Home Mom's

What do stay at home Mom's do all day if their kids are in school? I am serious, I'm not trying to be sarcastic. If the laundry and cleaning are done how else do you spend your time? Just wondering.

I'm not a SAHM, but I'd think if I were I'd spend a huge amount of my time cleaning. My house would stay immaculate and that would take a lot of time. Also, I'd probably read, exercise, scrapbook, play on the computer, walk the dogs, do yardwork, etc.

When the kids are in school and my job-work is done I take time to do the laundry, check in online for awhile, clean the house, do the grocery shopping, garden, meet up with friends.... the list is long. I really am not home that much though after the cleaning is done.

I was a STAHM and when DS's were in school full time I baked a lot, did a bunch of errands for DH's grandma who was getting on and subbed at the school my kids went to. I started working there once youngest was in 1st or second grade, so I only had a couple years to be "lazy". have to say I didn't do a lot of cleaning. hated it then, hate it now. My house is not dirty, but it's no Good Housekeeping either

When I was a stay at home mom I would get the kids off to school, get the house picked up and do on 'major" chore each day, laundry, dusting mini-blinds, you know all the stuff that doesn't get done now that I work. When I was done with this I would do some volunteer work at school, church and around our community, you know, the stuff they call you for but can't help because you have a "job". Then once the kids got home it was homework, running them places, etc.

In reality I sat on the couch and ate bon-bons

I clean, do the laundry, food shop. I volunteer at my sons' school a few days a week. I also take them to school and pick them up every day. The day goes faster than you'd think.

Or, ya know, bon-bons LOL

The ones I know take up their personal interests/hobbies, do volunteer work...either at the school and/or elsewhere in the community, get a PT job or start a business venture, and resume social lives via meeting for coffee, attending small group studies, etc.

IOW--they do the stuff they did in their spare time BEFORE they had kiddos.

I have 3 in school 1 at home.. I'll be honest that first year all 4 in school I'm doing nothing but sleeping

I can't wait for them to be in school ... though I don't want them to grow up.

I think I'd keep the house a lot more picked up, deep cleaning would be done a lot more often. The house would be more organized, dinners would be more thought out, grocery shopping would get done more efficiently and laundry would be caught up. Hopefully I'd take some time to go to the gym myself.

I think that you could easily waste the day away though ... think about it, kids out the door by what? 7AM ... you sit down with coffee to "rest" for a minute, next thing you know it's 9AM. You take a shower, clean up the kitchen from breakfast and it's 10:30AM ... not much time left for a TON of stuff on a daily basis before you head for school pickups. That's a trap I'd fall into.

It's true. You could conceivable spend every spare moment doing a cleaning task (windows inside and out, baseboards, washing drapery) not to mention caught up on laundry, and gardening.

I imagine the only women who really are able to sit on the couch are those who have hired people to do those things.

Love the replies! I am losing my job in 60 days and am seriously considering staying home for awhile. I have worked for 23 years and the thought of staying home is exciting and kinda scary. I didn't know what I would do with myself, but I love some of the ideas.

My neighbor goes back to bed after getting her kids off to school! Not much could get done then, I suppose.

I did a lot of volunteering in the school, played online, read books, spent time writing, picked up hobbies.

But cleaning??? Not so much! I was a terrible housewife. I did 99% of the parenting and probably 1% of the cleaning.

Since my son went to kindergarten this year, I recently began babysitting half the day for a friend who went back to work. I go to her house after I drop my kids of at school at 8:30 and she is home by noon. I then run any errands (mailing bills, etc) and three days a week I go to the school for a couple of hours and help out in my kid's classrooms and do other PTC work such as fundraisers,yearbook etc (you would be suprised at all the work that goes on behind the scenes each day by volounteer moms!).

Then when I do get to be "at home" I usually pick a room to clean up and do laundry etc. When it is spring and fall and warm out I mow the grass while the kids are at school as well so my husband doesn't have to do it in the evening and we have some extra family time. There is always stuff I have going on and I actually think I was more organized and on task as an administrative assistant than I am now as just a mom. I do much more now than I ever did before I had my kids and was a "stay at home" mom, because I am rarely ever at home..

I was a SAHM for 9 months when dd was in second grade. I totally cleaned the house from top to bottom, had a garage sale to get rid of all the clutter, organized all the closets and dd's room, painted every room in the house, volunteered at dd's school, went on every school field trip, and was a Girl Scout troop leader. I remember my ex coming to me with a shirt in his hand and asking, "Is this clean or did you put it back in my drawer accidentally? I just wore it yesterday." Yeah, it was clean.

Once I got all that stuff done, I went back to work. I think I need to be a housewife again for a few months to catch up around here now that I think of it! If only I could talk my boss into a sabbatical.

LOL! I would LOVE to just go back to bed for the whole day sometimes, must be nice!
