Stateroom Guarantees

I'm a little confused. I've read from some people that they were guaranteed only a certain catagory of staterooms, but most people have an actual stateroom number. How does the booking of rooms work? Are you really guaranteed that particular room or just a room in that catagory?

Here is the way that I understand the process>

If there is a particular cabin available when you book, you will be assigned that cabin. If not you will receive a gty cabin and you will be assigned a cabin at a later date.

Most reservations are made with a particular stateroom assigned. As capacity gets close to full or even full for a particular category, Guarantee, or "GTY" reservations in a particular category might be taken by the cruise line, in which you are guaranteed to be assigned by the time of sailing a stateroom in at least that category, with the possibility of being assigned to a higher category (lower number, i.e., a cat. 6 is a higher category than a cat. 9). The cruiselines have experience with a certain percentage of cancellations, much like hotels and overbooking, and based on expectations when the final payment in full date is approaching.

I've done a GTY on DCL, then got a stateroom number in that category a few days later, then a month later, which was about a month before sailing, was notified of an upgrade from an 8 to a 5. So here's one vote that GTY is not to be feared. I have also read, however, of a very disappointed Cat. 6 GTY booking that was assigned to a solid walled verandah at the aft portion of the ship--so that is something to be aware of, for instances where a particular category has some rooms with differences--also like the cat. 9's with two small portholes instead of the big window on deck 1.

Thanks for the explanations! Now I get it. We're planning on a 2007 cruise and will book as soon as those dates become available, so I'm assuming that we will have a cabin assignment from early on.
