Until I started reading the Disboards, I assumed that the 'beverage cooler' in the staterooms on the Wonder were mini-fridges. From what I read, they aren't very cold, or aren't cold at all!!

My brother who will be sailing with me next week is a Diabetic and requires insulin..and of course, the insulin needs to be kept cold. Other than a warm beverage cooler that we can stick an ice pack in, is there any other way they can help us out with keeping his insulin at the temperature it needs to be? Is there anything specific I should request from guest services to help out with this matter?

TIA! :goodvibes

If you are on the Magic or Wonder, you can call and request a fridge to store insulin. this will be a mini-fridge, and have read that it will be placed under the desk area, so no more storing anything under the desk if you have the mini fridge. A call to DCL should point you in the correct direction for getting this taken care of

I thought the cooling boxes were replaced on the Magic and Wonder? I saw a pic were the cooling box was empty, and the new REAL mini-fridges were under the desk, taking the place of the stool… :confused3

Thank you! Dont ask me why I naturally assumed those were mini-fridges - very bad research on my part :rolleyes1

Your brother needs to fill out this form, scan it, and email it to DCL.Special.Request.Medical@disney.com :

The form is on page 6

They'll provide refrigeration for his insulin

We were on the Wonder in November and the "cooler" kept our bottled water cold for the whole time. :confused3

We were on the Wonder last year, and the cooler box WAS a mini-fridge in our stateroom - it definitely kept things quite cold for us.

I agree...we were on the Magic in May 2009 for 7 nights and we took drinkable yogurts and juice pouches on board with us and they stayed cold the entire time!

The problem is that "cool" isn't good enough for medications like insulin. It has to be kept at a certain temperature. From what I understand the cooling boxes simply keep it a certain number of degrees under room temperature, which isn't stable enough for insulin.

I had to request a mini fridge for my daughter's injected medication that she takes every night and DCL was happy to accommodate (Magic ship). They did send me a disclaimer email that said: "In the event that a refrigerator is not available, please visit Guest Services on Deck 3 for 24-hour access to medical refrigeration services.

I definitely understand the need to be safe rather than sorry, but I think what the PP's are saying (and what my experience was) is that the "cooling boxes" DO keep things COLD. Not just cool. It seems I remember reading a thread a while back that indicated that the cooling boxes had been replaced with actual mini-fridges on both the Magic and Wonder? Don't know when that happened, or if they were actually replaced in ALL the rooms, but everything I have read in recent months about them seems to indicate that they now keep things as cold as you would want/need them to be?
