As of 6pm we are now in a state of emergency. We have a hospital in town so they want the roads to be clear for emergency vehicles. I'm on winter break, so it's nice to be able to see all the snow and not have to worry about whether or not school will be cancelled for tomorrow. :thumbsup2

Everyone stay warm.

I"m jealous. We're too far west for snow with this storm (Pittsburgh). I kept telling DH I wish I was snowed in so i could skip the family party earlier today :rotfl2:

dh has an hour commute and many fellow employees also do. They decided they're open at 9am which is an hour and a half delay. He thinks they're crazy and is not too happy about trying to drive in. They also have night classes that run until 10:30 which aren't canceled or closing early. I'm worried that it will be an ice rink tomorrow night.

Ironically, my parents, who live at the shore, left last night to visit my sister in upstate NY's snowbelt. Sis is expecting a few snow showers, but nothing like the Jersey shore is getting.

are they banning non-emergency vehicles on the roads? I'm trying to make a decision about a flight in philly in the am. If road travel is banned until tomorow afternoon I can cancel this trip guilt free.

Im in South Jersey and it is insane. I measured about a half hour ago and have 16 inches already! It's still snowing and to top it all off, a snow plow have not been down my street yet!.
I heard from one friend that only one lane on the parkway has been plowed.

I am in Bergen County NJ and just heard on the local news that all non emergency vehicles are banned and that ALL of New Jersey is in a state of emergency. They said that the roads are bad and that there has already been over 100 accidents on the Garden State Parkway.

I was in NH this weekend. I was going to stay a few more days, but decided to come back to NJ this morning. Left NH at 6:30 am and it hadn't started snowing there at all yet. Saw a little snow in Massachusetts on and off, but it got really bad by the time we hit the Parkway. When I got off at my exit the roads were horrible. That was around 1 pm. I can only imagine what they look like now.

My cousin told me that the snow plow actually got stuck on her street! Now that is just sad.

I have over two feet. My neighbor said he would snow blow my driveway tonight. But there is no way he can get out there in this blizzard. He is such a sweet man. When I went out this morning to get my paper it wasn't snowing that bad. But there was no paper. (they were having problems) So I thought I would go out again in an hour to see. Well just as I was getting ready to go, my doorbell rang and it was my neighbor bring it to me.

I am so lucky to have such sweet neighbors. He and my DH Ron were good friends and he took Ron's passing very hard. Since then he has done so much for me. I am so blessed.

Yeah, a friend called me and said it took 2 hours to go on the GSP from exit 63 to 36 in mid-afternoon. (Normally 25 minutes)

I don't think there's THAT much snow yet on Long Beach Island, but it's hard to tell. The wind is ferocious....and snow is piling up in uneven drifts. One side of my garage has about a 3 foot drift against it.....the other side barely a few inches.

Not sure what the wind speed has to be for it to be considered a blizzard, but I'm sure we passed it here.

I doubt I'd be able to go to work tomorrow even if I wanted to. But I used up all my personal time for the year and will have to make it up on Friday (NY's eve).

Your airline may have already made that decision for you. Check. Ignore the "Northeast Travel Alerts" information, and instead check the status of your exact flight on 12/27/10.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard "To be a blizzard, a snow storm must have winds in excess of 56 km/h (35 mph).[1] Additionally, blizzards must reduce visibility to 400 metres (1,300 ft) or less and must last for a prolonged period of time — typically three hours or more"

Aaah winter time on the East Coast. I'm hoping it's not a repeat of last year.

Do you have levels of emergencies? Here in Ohio, they'll have a "Level 3 emergency," or 2 or 1; and depending on the level different rules are in effect.

I remember we were under a level 3, and I got the call from the doctor that my mother took a turn for the worse, so I had to call the Red Cross to get my brothers (both military) home to see her. They were closed! On the answering machine they did have an emergency number, so thats what I called.

BTW - is this unusual for your area?

Phil said all flights are on for ten am on at the moment. No cancelations

yeah.. I was going to say I don't think they banned vehicles even though they did issue a state of emergency. All the stores and malls look like they are opening on time this morning.

My husband was up at 4:30 to dig out to head into work. The county offices and departments here are all still opening. I am hoping my drs office is open, I have a 5yo with an ear ache.

I can safely say that a state of emergency is along all of us along the NE coast! it has been for a day now!
