We are planning a Disneyland trip in September 2019, taking my granddaughter for the first time. I want to go when crowds are low, but I just found out Star Wars will be opening next year. Am I crazy for going in 2019?

Yes. When Carsland opened people were waiting 6-7 hours to ride RSR. Made it difficult to move anywhere around that area. Definitely and increase in crowds. And this has much more hype in my opinion.

Maybe unless Star Wars land is not open yet. Some people say it will open on May 24, 2019, some say in June and others say in October. If October is correct then you will be fine. If it opens before you go, it will be very busy every day. But then again, the crowds are never low at Disneyland now a days. So you might as well just go whatever time works for you. If its open then, the crowds will very likely be packed in on the Critter Country side of the park so just stay away from there and you should be fine. Have a great time whenever you decide to go.

To note some people think the annual passes will go up again this year BIG just before the time Star Wars land opens next year. So if you see a jump in annual pass prices later this year, that is probably just before it will open in 2019.

I will be there in 2019 and I am not crazy...:crazy2:

You are not crazy to go in 2019 but odds are it will be pretty crowded. We usually go every 2 years which would mean March 2020 will be our next trip and I think we’ll go in early 2019 now instead and then maybe take a break for a few years and go back once our kids are finished school.

If you are still thinking of going in September, 2019, I highly suggest staying onsite. It will give you Magic Morning/Early Entry every day. If Disney does do anything for anyone for Star Wars, I think it would be for guests staying on site.

... I want to go when crowds are low...

As stated above, there really aren't any predictably low crowd periods at DLR anymore. Crowd predicting calendars and websites are notoriously inaccurate for DLR, especially since the 60th anniversary. There are low crowd days, but they aren't easy to predict ahead of time and they aren't always logical. For example, Memorial Day Weekend last year was low crowds until the Monday. Who would have guessed? And if a time period looks to be slower, Disney will have some publicity trick up their sleeve to pull in the crowds.
So just pick the time, SWL or not, that works best for your schedule and your granddaughter's, then come back here to do your research and planning. With good planning and organization, you can have a great time no matter how crowded the parks are.
And, no, you're not crazy, but, truthfully, for lower-than-peak crowds, you probably will be better off trying to visit before SWL opens in 2019.

On 2-3 of our longer trips I've found the Monday to be significantly more crowded than the weekends. These were not holiday weekends or any special events. Just regular weeks usually in early-mid June. This always surprised me, and I still don't really understand it. I'm sure it's not always the case, though.
