Star Wars in Tomorrowland

I love Star Wars but the Studios is the place for that. Jim Hill talks about adding stores, an eatery and even an attraction to the area.

Please tell me what I'm missing in Jim Hill's article. I don't see anything in the article about moving Star Wars from Disney's Hollywood Studios to Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

The paragraph immediately prior to the one quoted by Mouse Extra is:

To explain: George Lucas is currently scheduled to meet with senior officials at Walt Disney Imagineering in late September. Reportedly to review the work that's been done to date on "Star Tours 2.0" as well as to talk about how Lucasfilm's presence at Disneyland could be expanded.

In fact, the paragraph the Mouse Extra quotes starts off, "much in the style of the 'Lucas Land' project that’s now in the work for Disney’s Hollywood Studios"... In other words, the rumored/proposed Lucas enhancements in Florida would be at the Studios park.

The biggest question I have is why is Disney doing the work(if any) on Star Tours 2.0 and not ILM? I can only guess they are talking about something other than an update on the film...then again why would Disney be working on it is there something new in the Vekoma catalog this year that will fit for Star Tours?

If something's being changed, the Disney probably needs to do physical plant work. If I recall correctly, George wanted new simulators.

In general:

1. I don't think the two are complimentary.
2. When I go to the parks the last thing I want is to be surrounded by geeks dressed up as stormtroopers.
3. To me it's just another reminder and more proof that Disney can't make good product anymore and relies on the creativity of others.
4. Star Wars for me ended at "The Empire Strikes Back". The remaining 4 films were a muppet-fest and lame stories soaked in CGI.

One ride is OK, but beyond that, no thanks.

I'm no fan of the newer Star Wars movies and want no part of it being in Tomorrow Land. Having said that though, Disney studios (MGM) could and would benefit from a expanded version in that park. It's such a small park and after my last visit, I just have no desire to go back. I love TOT, but that's about it. A lot of what else they offer seems so bland and boring. The back lot tour is almost a farce, IMO. A really well done "SW" area with some cool attractions, shops, restaurants, etc, could boost attendance numbers. I hope something good happens. I don't want too see Disney pull another Stitch's great escape on us.

Well, I know there's a lot of people that disagree with you. Just like I see no point in watching people jump around in weird outfits for $80 a seat (La Nouba) everyone has different likes and dislikes.

Star Wars is one of the biggest movie (and merchandise) franchises of all time and appeals to a massively wide audience. It's especially important when you consider the lack of alternatives Disney has right now that can counter the Harry Potter land at IOA. Making a big Star Wars area with new places to explore and updated attractions would go a long way toward helping people to keep going to MG....uhh...Hollywood Studios

The last two successful attractions at WDW haven't had any tie-ins at all: 'Soaring' and 'Expedition: Everest'. All the entire all the recent tie-ins from 'Monsters Inc Laugh Floor' to 'Stitch' to 'Nemo Seas' to the others have been flops for attendance.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'The Haunted Mansion' had no movies when they opened - and they drove attendance through the roof.

Maybe it's time for Disney to focus on the attraction instead of the marketing. A good, fully realized attraction with a huge appeal would be more for WDW than wasting the millions it will take wring that last few dying dollars from a worn-out franchise.

The back lot tour is almost a farce

Come on now...the Back Lot Tour has to be one of the best attractions Disney has ever made....was the Golden Girls house off the tour the day you went or something? Just seeing the Golden Girls house is worth the price of a park hopper. Hopefully you at least got a blurry picture of the rusting out cockpit hulk from the movie Blue Thunder...I'm betting if one of those things happened you would change your tune on the farce idea.

Referring specifically to a "Studios" park, people tend to expect Movie or at least TV tie-ins

No, you're not, but you are one of just a few. Several years ago I floated an argument that Disney should not have Star Tours, Indiana Jones, or the Muppets (before the purchase) in their parks. It didn't get very much traction.

My point was "created" content v. "licensed" content.

First time I was like "Cool, Golden Girls House" then four years later I'm like "OK, Disney produces SO MANY TV Shows and films and The Golden Girls House is STILL the highlight of the tour?????" Oh can't forget the house from one of the Ernest movies.
For being one of the newer parks, MGM can sure feel like the most DATED one at times.
