Hi - I know that it is a terrible use of points but my mom asked today if a resale DVC contract could be used to pay for star cruiser. We already have blue cards from different points. I know I said I wanted to wait on buying CCV but now she’s also having fun looking at resale and comparing it to the cost of other trips.

I think the answer is no but just wanted to confirm.

Only resale points purchased prior to 3/21/2011 can be used.

Just for others there are a few different dates that changed things.

2011 restricted resale points from trading until the Disney Colllection and some other things.

In 2016, resale owners were restricted being part of membership extras unless they had direct points as well. It started at 25 points and then went to 75 in 2018, 100 in 2019, 125 in 2020, and then in 2021 up to 150.

In 2019, they added RIV to the system which now restricted resale points from booking there and future resorts.

So in my case does cruiser fail because it is part of the Disney collection?

Owning resale doesn’t negate having a blue card from owning direct points as well, right?

I know that resale wouldn’t work for restricted points.

Correct. Your resale points can not be used for the Star Cruiser because they were bought after 2011.

Anybody can add on direct points to qualify for membership extras. As long as one gets to 150 right now (or whatever the minimum is when you add on), then you qualify. If you are a new owner, you must by all 150 in your first contract. If you already own points resale, then you can add on in smaller amounts (25 or 50, depending on resort) to work your way up.

No matter what, any direct points bought today can be used at RIV and future resorts, even if you don't add on enough to reach the 150 for membership extras. Where points can be used is not tied to the membership extras program...blue card....they are two different things.

Resale points bought today are restricted from use at RIV and future resorts, even for owners who already have direct points. So, if I buy BLT today, I still can't use them at RIV and future resorts, even though all my other points are eligible for stays there.
