Does anyone know what Southwest's requirements are for flying standby- and how does standby work? I have a rental car that needs to be returned by 1pm (in Cleveland) but our flight isn't until 7pm. Would we be able to fly standby on an earlier flight, if space is available, while waiting for our ticketed flight?

Depends on the fare you've paid:

http://www.southwest.com/html/air/fare-information.html

Business Select
Standby travel between the same city pairs and on the original date of travel is permitted with no change in fare; however, you may lose the privilege of boarding in the first portion of the "A" group.

Anytime
Standby travel between the same city pairs and on the original date of travel is permitted with no change in fare.

Wanna Get Away
Standby travel requires an upgrade to the Anytime fare.

Senior Fares
Standby travel requires an upgrade to the Anytime fare.

DING! Fares
Standby travel is permitted but requires that the Customer pay the difference between the original fare and the "Anytime" fare.

Thank you! I searched on Southwest AND here on the DIS and wasn't coming up with the information I needed... or at least, my laptop wouldn't LOAD the information (grrrr.... but that's another topic!).

Thanks for your help and for the link.
