Standard vs. Preferred rooms?

Hello!

I am looking into a possible future trip to WDW with my boyfriend, and was looking online at hotel prices.

Being as we are college students with not a lot of spare cash, we've decided to stay in the value resorts. At first we considered camping, but as our length of time at WDW is probably going to be about 1-2 weeks, we thought a bed might be best this time.

I have been looking around and can't seem to find any information (I probably overlooked it :confused3 ) regarding the difference between standard and preferred rooms.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the difference, and what you all would recommend? If there is a significant difference (i.e. newer, nicer rooms compared to older, not as pleasant ones) then we might consider shelling out the extra money. If not, then we'll see.

Thanks so much!
:dance3:

I think I'm right in saying that the only difference between standard and "preferred" rooms are that they are located nearer to the resort hub where the pool, check-in desk, food and gift shop are found... basically means a bit less far to drag your luggage (unless using MME :) ), less of a walk every day to/from the bus stops.

"Standard or preferred" refers to location, only. (The inside of the rooms are exactly alike.)

Preferred rooms are located closer to the main building... food court, check-in desk, gift shop and are closer to the bus stops. It can also refer to the view... water/pool vs parking lot.

After all the walking in the park, some prefer a closer location at the resort, while others prefer a standard room because they are usually less noisy... (foot traffic and noise from the main pool).

It's all about location. The rooms are exactly alike, except for where they are located. If you go to allearsnet.com you can look at the map of each resort and see what we are talking about.

At AS Sports the Surf's Up building is preferred.
At AS Music the Calypso building is preferred.
At As Movies the Toy Story, Fantasia, and Dalmation buildings are all preferred.

At POP the front half (from the elevators back toward the main building) in the 50's 60's, and 70's are all preferred.

Preferred rooms just save you a little walking, otherwise they are just like the standard rooms. (and they don't always do that--my standard room at AS Sports this past Dec was closer than my Preferred room at AS Sports was last May. I was in the football building in Dec and in the back of the Surf's Up building last May).

Thanks for the information everyone :thumbsup2

Hey, paying less for a potentially quieter room? Sounds like a deal to me. Boyfriend and I can stand to walk a few steps more to get where we need to go.

I'm glad that's all the price difference was about!
:woohoo:
