You can get pretty close. In my experience though some man will always stand up in front of me and put his 8 year old on his shoulders while his wife films the entire show on her full sized iPad.
We got fairly close today! While we weren't right up front, we maybe could've gotten closer and we're close enough to see who was performing. Luckily, my kid was able to identify who it was, as I had no idea!
There is a chain about 10 feet back from the stage. The chain is always up, so you can check it out when the show isn't happening.
The stage itself is pretty high - 8-10 feet - so if you are right at the front you will not be able to see the characters as they enter very well. They do come to the front of the stage, but the other dancers stay farther back at times. The best close location is 2-3 people deep if you can be sure you don't have a tall person in front of you
