Because of my daughter's food allergy issues, our plan for St Thomas is to eat an early lunch on board and then head to a beach on St Thomas for a few hours. After reading online, I think we have settled on Magens Bay, although I could be talked into another beach. I saw a picture of a sign saying that taxi service from the cruise pier to the beach will be $10 per person. Is this really what I should expect, or since we are a family of 4, is there a better option than paying $40 each way for a taxi?

Also, I can't remember- do we need to pack our own towels for a visit to the beach?

On a side note, my other daughter really enjoys doing a little local shopping and also seeing some historical places. Is there a stop in town in St Thomas that would interest her?

I can't help you (much) on the second question; however, concerning transportation to Magens Bay, IMHO, you are best to take a taxi. Yes, I agree $80 roundtrip does seem expensive, but I wouldn't want to rent a car, I doubt public transportation (if it exists) will get you there and you can't walk it. Magens Bay is beautiful and I highly recommend it. Depending on when you go, it can get crowded, but the beach is huge. You can take DCL towels from the ship. The restrooms/changing rooms are huge and nice. The perimeter of the beach is lined with palm trees and picnic tables. When we weren't splashing around in the water we hung out on a picnic table in the shade.

Concerning local shopping, there are many shops right at the port. Not much in the way of historical sites, but there are plenty of places to shop.

Enjoy your cruise!

You will be docking at Havensight, which is a huge shopping mall, a lot of shopping right there at port within walking distance! As for going to Magens Bay, I would suggest a taxi. We have been to St. Thomas twice, the first time we took an excursion to Magens Bay therefore transportation was included and the second time we stayed within port and just walked around. We have not done a taxi in St. Thomas but from reading on here and hearing from others who have, it's the best bang for your buck.

St. Thomas is beautiful, enjoy!

Thank you so much for this advice. I welcome any other advice, too.

Taxi works great. Sorry but that's the best choice- we did it in December. I remember it being more like $8 per person, plus admission to the beach. Bring cash for everything.

The taxi is actually $8 when there are multiple people. It is $10 for one. It also cost $4 each I believe to get into the beach. You can take the ships towels instead of packing your own. There are chairs and floats to rent at Magen's Bay. You can easily get a cab just outside the gate to the pier. There are many taxis waiting at the beach to bring you back. Depending on how many ships are in port the beach may be pretty busy around noon. We had a great time there. Very pretty, great water, lots of shade and clean sand.

Thank you one and all for the advice. As everyone on here, I hope to make this a great trip for my family and you are a big help.
