whats there to do in St.Petersburg and some ideal places for shopping entertainment and dining that should not be missed ?

Great beaches and good food, been a long time since I have been there.

not sure about the beaches... but the royal palace is pretty cool to see, plan the better part of a day to see it all.

Salvador Dali museum was a neat side trip for us while in St. Pete pirate:

I used to live there and still live within an hours drive. In the downtown area this is a shopping and entertainment complex called BayWalk. It has several restaurants and a movie theater and some eclectic shops and upscale clothing stores. The Dali museum is near there, as are several others including a Holocaust museum. There is a pier large enough to drive on that extends into Tampa Bay that is always a favorite with tourists, it has shops and restaurants at the end.

You did not mention if you were referring to the beach part of St Petersburg. If you are going to the beach area there are alot of beaches that all run together. There is an area called John's Pass Village at Maderia Beach that many enjoy, it has lots of shops. If you are looking for incredible food out near the beaches is you go north to Indian Rocks Beach there is a well known restaurant called Salt Rock Grill. Expensive but worth it.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I can help you out on this! ;) Of course, yes the beaches are great and lots of beaches! There is also Fort Desoto (at the mouth of Tampa Bay) that is nice-lots of acreage, has surrey rentals and such, tour the fort, take a ferry out to Egmont Key, playgrounds if you have kids, etc. There are of course lots of nice restaurants and shops along the beach road.
In downtown St. Pete, we have lots of museums-history and art (as pp mentioned we have the Salvador Dali museum). There is also the St. Pete pier which is nice to visit-it has shopping inside the building on the end and restaurants as well-I recommend Cha Cha's on the top floor -good food and great view of the Bay! There is also Baywalk not too far from the pier that has restaurants and shopping and a movie theater, also has a night life if you're interested in that sort of thing. I don't know what time of year you are coming but during baseball season we have the MLB team the Devil Rays-Tropicana Field is in Downtown.
And lastly, it only takes about 30 minutes to get to Tampa which has a lot of things there of course. I could go on and on but is there a specific type of dining or museum or entertainment that might suit your fancy?

Sorry if I mentioned the same things as Floridagram-I am a little tired today and not reading everything the right way!
