I'm having my family over for dinner Saturday and I am in the process of making my grocery list. I was planning a St. Patty's day type of dinner. I thought I would do kornbeef and cabbage with potatoes and carrots in my new crockpot. What do you all serve as accompaniment dishes? All I can think of is applesauce but I am not really ready to go with that as yet.

not much help here, that's all I serve but I do add some yummy bread too.

We also watch the Quiet Man with John Wayne just to keep the mood...such a great St. Patty's day movie!

Corned beed with cabbage and potatoes seems to be a pretty rounded-out dinner for us. The only thing I add is bread -- we usually have a good rye bread (I like to make it in the bread machine) and some Irish Soda bread. Actually, the Irish Soda bread is more like a dessert to us, so that's how we usually serve it!

Can't wait till next week. My mouth is watering for that corned beef already!!

Irish soda bread. I forgot all about that. We made it a few years ago, just for fun. I don't remember it being that hard to make. I'm going to have to see if I can dig out that recipe

we have roasted lamb...

i read somewhere (bon appetit, i think) that roast lamb was more authentically irish than corned beef.

yes, big hunks of irish soda bread is the best. it doesn't keep well and dries out quickly, so it's best to use it on the day it's served. for dessert one year, i made this awesome dessert. it was like a white cake squares drenched in a powdered sugar glaze and covered with chopped salted peanuts. the salty and sweet combination is scrumptious. i think they were called blarney stones. i got them from an issue of taste and home magazine. does anyone else subscribe?

How about Irish potato candy? It has been a few years since I made these, I remember they contain coconut and are rolled in cinnamon. Also Pillsbury has slice and bake, actually plop on a pan cookies, with shamrocks in the middle. I bought some last night to serve on Wednesday for just a little touch of Irish.

In January I planted about a dozen small pots of shamrocks. My plan was to give them out as party favors. They look so pretty now. They are not in bloom yet but the are well started. I will probably scatter them about the house and hand them out as people leave.
